I am Professor of Operations Research in the Department of Mathematics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
I received my Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1986, and my MBA and Ph.D. in Operations Research from Rutgers University in 1992 and 1993, respectively. From 1994 to 2004, I was a faculty member in the Department of Operations at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. I joined the Department of Mathematics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2003, where I have been Professor of Stochastic Operations Research since 2012. I served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics from 2016 to 2020.
My research is in stochastic operations research, with particular interests in queueing theory and strategic queueing, stochastic optimization and dynamic programming, learning and experimentation under uncertainty, and stochastic models in service and production systems. More recently, I have also been interested in connections between stochastic optimization, reinforcement learning, and game-theoretic models of service systems.
My teaching includes undergraduate and graduate courses in Operations Research, Probability, Statistics, Stochastic Processes and Models, Queueing Theory, and Dynamic Programming. I have also taught in interdisciplinary graduate programs, including the MSc program in Biostatistics jointly organized by the Department of Mathematics and the Medical School of the University of Athens.
I have supervised doctoral and master's research in Operations Research, stochastic modeling, and related areas. From 2008 to 2014, I served as Vice-Director and Director of the graduate program in Biostatistics, jointly organized by the University of Athens and the University of Ioannina.
My research has appeared in journals including Management Science, Operations Research, Mathematics of Operations Research, Queueing Systems, and Annals of Operations Research. I serve the Operations Research community through editorial work, refereeing, conference organization, and participation in scientific committees.
