Since I joined CMS, I have also been involved in the Level-1 Trigger project. The CMS trigger and data acquisition system, one of the most complicated electronic, readout and event selection systems ever built in particle physics, underwent a major upgrade in 2016 for Run II and Run III, to handle twice as high energy and four times as high luminosity as in Run I. It is now undergoing another major upgrade for Run IV and Run V (Phase II of the LHC era), to handle another four times higher luminosity, incorporating also new detectors, new inputs – notably tracks from the silicon tracker – and new algorithms. The Phase-II trigger will be a completely new system, with a new architecture, 30 times higher bandwidth and 12 times faster logic than nowadays. The upgraded L1 Trigger is based on about 250 new electronic boards of at least five custom types using state-of-the-art Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). It will be a prime example of a major stride in experimental physics, based not only on technological advances, but also on innovation and brainstorming. NKUA is a member of the Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TriDAS) Board of CMS, contributing significantly in the L1 Trigger project with the work of students, postdocs, and an engineer. In the CMS “Money Matrix”, Greece shares responsibility for the Phase-II Muon Trigger, the Global Trigger subsystem and the new Correlator subsystem, which implements particle flow algorithms at Level 1.
I supervise the efforts of the NKUA/IASA team, which extend to operations and upgrades of various trigger modules, as well as work for the Data Performance Group (DPG). Past and present activities of the team include: Muon Trigger and Calorimeter Trigger performance studies, L1 Muon online software maintenance, L1 Muon DPG coordination, algorithm development for the Phase-I Scouting demonstrator and contributions to the Phase-II Correlator Trigger (e/γ algorithms, firmware, emulators). Of note is the significant contribution of the team in the development and commissioning of the Barrel Muon Track Finder (BMTF) for the Run III and the Phase II of CMS and in the prototype board design of the BMT Layer-1 trigger primitive generator for the Phase-II Barrel Muon Trigger Upgrade. In parallel, I have been serving as Muon Trigger Algorithms coordinator (2018-2020) and Muon Trigger Subsystem Upgrade manager (2020-present), and I am co-author of the CMS L1 Trigger Upgrade TDR. I aim to continue and extend my involvement in the testing, installation and commissioning of the Phase-II Muon Trigger subsystem, which is planned to begin in 2026.
