Anna Despotopoulou is Professor in English Literature and Culture in the Department of English Language and Literature, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She teaches 19th, 20th, and 21st-century English fiction. In 2015 she published the monograph Women and the Railway: 1850-1915 (Edinburgh University Press). She has co-edited the volumes Hotel Modernisms (with V. Kolocotroni and E. Mitsi; Routledge 2023), Ruins in the Literary and Cultural Imagination (with E. Mitsi, S. Dimakopoulou, E. Aretoulakis; Palgrave Macmillan, 2019), Henry James and the Supernatural (with Kimberly Reed; Palgrave-Macmillan, 2011), Transforming Henry James (with Anna De Biasio and Donatella Izzo, Cambridge Scholars 2013), and Reconstructing Pain and Joy: Linguistic, Literary, and Cultural Perspectives (with Ch. Lascaratou and E. Ifantidou; Cambridge Scholars, 2008), as well as the 3rd special issue of the electronic journal Synthesis, entitled Experiments in/of Realism (2011), with Katerina Kitsi-Mitakou. She has published articles on Henry James, George Eliot, Jane Austen, Christina Rossetti, Rhoda Broughton, Joseph Conrad, and Peter Shaffer in international academic journals and edited books. In 2016-17 she was elected Associate Visiting Research Fellow at the Rothermere American Institute, University of Oxford. She was the Principal Investigator of the research project HOTEMS, "Hotels and the Modern Subject: 1890-1940 (2020-23), funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation.

2024: The book I co-edited with Efterpi Mitsi, Victorians and Modern Greece: Literary and Cultural Encounters, will be published by Routledge (Series: British School at Athens - Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies) in October. 

2023: This year I am President of the Henry James Society. I organized panels and participated in these conferences: ALA (Boston), Henry James Society (Kyoto), MLA (Philadelphia).

2023: The book I co-edited with Vassiliki Kolocotroni and Efterpi Mitsi, Hotel Modernisms, is coming out in March, published by Routledge!
