Thanasis G. Papaioannou is an Assistant Professor on cloud computing in the Department of Digital Industry Technologies of the NKUA . He received a Bachelor's (1998) and a Master's Degree Specialization (2000) in Computer Networks and Distributed/Parallel Systems from the Department of Science of Computer Science at the University of Crete (Heraklion), and a Ph.D. Diploma (2007) from the Department of Informatics, Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), Greece.

From October 2008 to April 2013, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Distributed Information Systems (LSIR) of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland (headed by Prof. Karl Aberer). He has been a member of several research groups and most recently, since October 2013 until 2015 he was a senior researcher at the Networks and Communications Laboratory (headed by Prof. Leandros Tassiulas) of the Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI) of the Center of Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), while from 2016 until today he is a senior researcher in the Services, Telecommunications and Economics (STEcon) group of the Athens University of Economics and Business (headed by Prof. George D. Stamoulis).

From 2007 until today he has been autonomously teaching as a Visiting Professor (P.D. 407/80) for 17 semesters at the University of Thessaly and the Athens University of Economics and Business various courses on Distributed Systems, Computer Security and Network Programming, Privacy, Programming (Python, C, MATLAB) and Mobile Application Programming in Electrical Engineering and Mech. Computer, IT and Telecommunications, Digital Systems and Energy Systems, as well as in the Master's Degree Programs "Applied Informatics", "Modern Communication Systems and Internet of Things", and "Intelligent Systems and IoT' .

He has published more than 80 articles in leading international conferences and journals such as IEEE Infocom, IEEE ICDE, ACM SOCC, IEEE ICDCS, Elsevier Computer Networks, Transactions on Smart Grid, etc., which have received more than 1950 cross-references (according to Google Scholar) and also has 1 book (in the Foundations and Trends® in Networking Series publications, NowPublishers). Since 2018 he is a member of the IEEE TC on Smart Grid Communications. He has been a member of the technical committee of more than 30 conferences, such as SIGMOD, ICDE, ICDCS, SSDBM, Globecom, CCNC, etc. His research interests are in the areas of cloud optimization and networks, resource management in the computing grid, incentive mechanisms and serious games in the smart grid, trust and privacy, and network services. He has worked in more than 22 European and national research projects in the above research areas.
