Professor

Anthony Tsarbopoulos, is a Professor at the Medical School National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He is also the Director of the Bioanalytical Department at The Goulandris Natural History Museum. He received his BS degree in Chemistry from University of Athens and his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Michigan State University. He was a Senior Research Fellow at the Mayo Medical School, and then a Group Leader in the Structural Chemistry Department of Merck/Schering-Plough Research Institute. Dr. Tsarbopoulos has a long experience in the area of complex sample analysis by modern chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods. He has established advanced bioanalytical methods that incorporate, ultra-performance liquid chromatographic techniques and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-HR MS/MS) techniques for metabolic, quantitative analysis, pharmacokinetic and structure modification studies of drugs and bioactive compounds of pharmacological interest. He has been the pioneer in developing MS methodologies for detection of protein-ligand noncovalent complexes and determination of the ligand binding sites, and he has applied novel advancement into monitoring several biological systems such as that of the rasprotein and the β-amyloid peptide. His recent research interest is focused on ligand disruption of protein aggregation processes in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), with an emphasis on discovering novel molecules of natural origin and/or semi-synthetic analogues thereof possessing anti-neurodegenerative properties. In addition, he is interested in discovering new biomarkers for AD by using a range of –omics technologies (proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomics) in a variety of biological fluids. He is invited speaker at Universities in Europe, USA and Asia (21) and International Scientific Conferences (37). He is a reviewer for international scientific journals and he has over 92 publications in refereed scientific journals with more than 2800 citations (h-index: 31, Google Scholar), and over 170 presentations in international conferences.
