Dr. Evangelos Oikonomou, Assistant Professor of Cardiology (MD, MSc, PhD)

Dr. Evangelos Oikonomou, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the 3rd Department of Cardiology of the “Sotiria” Chest Disease Hospital, affiliated with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Athens, Greece

A graduate of the University of Athens Medical School (2003), Dr. Oikonomou has pursued multiple advanced degrees, including a Master of Science in Cardiology Intensive Care (2011), a PhD in heart failure and endothelial dysfunction (2013), a Master’s in Health Services Administration (2022, Frederick University, Cyprus), and an MSc in Medical Research Methodology (2022, University of Thessaloniki).

Following his certification in cardiology in 2013, Dr. Oikonomou’s clinical journey has spanned key academic and clinical institutions. He began as a Clinical and Research Fellow at the 1st Department of Cardiology at Hippokration Hospital, progressed to Consultant Cardiologist roles in both emergency and inpatient settings, and completed a fellowship in Cardiac MRI at the University Hospital of Leuven in Belgium in 2018. Since 2023, he has been serving in his current academic role.

Dr. Oikonomou is deeply embedded in both national and international cardiovascular communities.  He also serves on the Supreme Health Council of Greece’s National Provider of Health Services.

His research is both prolific and influential, focusing on general cardiology, atherosclerosis, heart failure, and cardiovascular epidemiology. As of 2025, he has authored over 380 publications in SCI-indexed journals, with an H-index of 45 and more than 8,700 citations. He has also contributed 11 book chapters, over 250 abstracts at international conferences, and has participated in 6 clinical trials. His work has been widely cited and has significantly shaped contemporary understanding of cardiovascular pathophysiology and therapeutics.
