Professor Christos Kroupis mini CV

Professor Christos Kroupis has been teaching Medical Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry courses in undergraduates of Medicine and Dentistry Schools and Clinical Chemistry-Molecular Diagnostics courses in postgraduate students of Chemistry and Biology departments in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) for over 17 years. He obtained a BSc degree from NKUA (Chemistry Dept.), a MSc degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, USA (Biochemistry-Molecular Biology Dept.) for his work on T. fusca mutants and a PhD degree from NKUA (Chemistry Dept.) for molecular studies in BRCA genes and hereditary breast cancer genetics. Before becoming a Lecturer of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Diagnostics in Attikon University Hospital, University of Athens Medical School in 2006 -and then an Assistant, Associate and Full Professor in 2011, 2019 and 2023 respectively-, he has worked as a researcher for Hoffmann-La Roche, NJ, USA (basic cardiovascular research) and as a staff Clinical Biochemist and Molecular Biologist for clinical labs at Onassis Cardiac Center and Mitera Surgical Center in Athens, Greece for over 12 years. He has supervised a post-doctoral, three doctoral and 20 MSc students (all completed) and his research work has been recorded in ~100 PubMed peer-reviewed articles (h-index 25, 2300 citations, 40% as first, last or corresponding author). He has an active role in the Editorial boards of leading journals such as Clinical Chemistry & Laboratory Medicine and Medicina (Genetics section). He is involved in quality assurance issues as he serves as a Lead Assessor for ISO15189 in clinical labs for the National Accreditation System of Greece (ESYD). He has been the National Representative in European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) for 11 continuous years where he has also served as a chair of the EFLM Working Group-IVD during 2014-15. He has organized many National Congresses of Clinical Chemistry-Clinical Biochemistry, Opthalmic Genetics conferences and the 22nd European Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in Athens (EuroMedlab 2017) with great success. He has delivered over 70 speeches in National and International Congresses. His main research interests have included biomarkers for breast cancer and cervical neoplasia, dementia biomarkers and genetics, heart failure and HIT in cardiac disease and ophthalmic genetics in macular degeneration and glaucoma.
