PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF PNEUMONOLOGY, MEDICAL SCHOOL, UOA

ΣΥΝΤΟΜΟ ΒΙΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΟ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΜΑ

Τελείωσε την στρατιωτική ιατρική και την πολιτική ιατρική σχολή του ΑΠΘ με “άριστα”, ειδικεύθηκε στην πνευμονολογική κλινική του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, όπου εκπόνησε την διδακτορική του διατριβή (άριστα). Μετεκπαιδεύθηκε στο Harvard University (υποτροφία ΥΕΘΑ), το Boston University και στο  Imperial College-Royal Brompton Hospital (sabbatical). Διετέλεσε μέλος ΔΕΠ-καθηγητής πνευμονολογίας στα Πανεπιστήμια της  Κρήτης,  το ΔΠΘ και στο ΕΚΠΑ, όπου είναι ομότιμος καθηγητής πνευμονολογίας. Ανήλθε μέχρι του βαθμού του Γενικού  Αρχιάτρου.

Ιδρυτής του ΜΠΣ (Master) “Κλινική φαρμακολογία-Θεραπευτική», και «Ιατρική του Ύπνου» στο ΔΠΘ. Έχει διευθύνει και οργανώσει διάφορες πνευμονολογικές κλινικές (401 ΓΣΝΑ, Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης, ΔΠΘ). Έχει δημοσιεύσει >500 άρθρα σε διεθνή περιοδικά με κριτές (Scopus), το έργο του έχει 38.000 ετεροαναφορές (citations), με H-index 82 (Google scholar). Επιβλέπων καθηγητής σε >50 διδακτορικές διατριβές. Συγκαταλέγεται μεταξύ των επιστημόνων με μεγάλη διεθνή επιρροή (2%).Είναι μέλος της συντακτικής επιτροπής (editorial board)  πολλών διεθνών περιοδικών και διεθνών επιτροπών για την έκδοση οδηγιών (guidelines) για νοσήματα του αναπνευστικού. Είναι ιδρυτικό μέλος των Fellows  της Ευρωπαϊκής Πνευμονολογικής Εταιρίας (FERS).

SHORT CURRICULUM VITAE

 

 Demosthenes Bouros is emeritus professor of Pneumonology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Medical School, Greece. He started his academic career as assistant Professor of Pneumonology (1989) and associate Professor (1995-2002), at the Medical School, University of Crete, and Professor of Pneumonology at the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece (2002-2014), and Professor of Pneumonology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece (2014-2019).

He was trained at Harvard and Boston Universities, USA, and the Royal Brompton Hospital, UK. He warded as visiting professor at the Medical University of Vienna by the European Respiratory Society (ERS). 

Clinical Experience: Since 2019 is head of the department of respiratory diseases and the ILDU unit of the Athens Medical Center, Athens, Greece. Previous posts: head of Respiratory disease departments:  401 Army General Hospital, Athens (1984-1986 and 1988-1990); vice director Dept. of Thoracic Medicine, University hospital of Crete (1990-2002); director Dept. of Respiratory Medicine, University hospital of Alexandroupolis (2002-2014); head of ILD unit, Hospital for Diseases of the Chest ‘Sotiria”, Athens, (2014-2019), which is the National center of excellence for rare pulmonary diseases with >2000 patients in record, participating in many international clinical trials.

One of the most highly cited respiratory physicians worldwide (top 2%) and expert in interstitial lung diseases, has published >530 articles (Scopus) in peer review international journals, has >38.000 citations, H index 82 (Google Scholar), is/was member of the Editorial Board of many prestigious medical journals, including LANCET-Respiratory Medicine, CHEST, RESPIRATION, BMC series, etc., and Editor-in-chief of the official journal of the Hellenic Thoracic Society Pneumon. Editor of the book “Pleural Disease, 2nd ed, Informa, NY) and clinical pharmacology and therapeutics (Athens, Greece).

As an international expert in interstitial lung diseases, he served as a member of the ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT committee for the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) official guidelines (AJRCCM 2011, AJRCCM 2018, AJRCCM 2021) guidelines; he served also as a member of the ATS/ERS new classification of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs) (AJRCCM 2013).

He is a foundation member of the fellows of the European Respiratory Society (FERS), member of the board of the Hellenic Thoracic Society, fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP), the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (FAPSR) and member of the American Thoracic Society (ATS). He is an honorary member of many societies of Pneumonology in various countries. He is the national representative to European Union of Medical Specialists UEMS) for the rare diseases. He has been founder and director of two master’s degree programs, in “clinical pharmacology and therapeutics” and in “sleep medicine”.

He has been elected and served as the National Delegate of the ERS (1999-2003), a member of the council and the nomination committee of the ERS (2002-2003), and a member of the long-range planning committee of the ATS and the ERS. He served as an auditor of the ERS (2004-2007) and he is a member of the Assembly on Allergy, Inflammation and Immunology (AII) Program Committee of the ATS. He is mentor of many young doctors and invited lecturer of many scientific societies internationally.  During his 30 years serving as an academic in medicine taught more than 4.000 medical students in pulmonary medicine, pathophysiology and clinical pharmacology.

His main research interests include the pathophysiologic /pathogenetic mechanisms, clinical presentation, and course of interstitial lung diseases. Among them is the pioneer investigation of experimental pharmacologic treatments for ILDs and their comorbidities, the role of the mesenchymal stem cell and extracellular vesicles application in chronic lung diseases, including pulmonary fibrosis and COPD.
