Dr Emmanuel Vassilakis is an expert in Remote Sensing and GIS, with emphasis in optical satellite image processing especially in high resolution data interpretation. His education includes BSc in Geology, MSc in Applied Geology and PhD in Remote Sensing & GIS Techniques. He is still collaborating with Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences Dpt at MIT (USA) after appointed as Post Doctoral Associate during 2006 and as Visiting Scientist during '07, '08, '10 and '18, as well as Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich at which after several visits ('07, '08, '14, '17, '19) he collaborates at the Visiting Professor position. Currently he is teaching Remote Sensing, Geomorphology, GIS, Innovative Techniques for Field Mapping and Digital Mapping Applications for undergraduate students at the School of Geology & Geo-environment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens where he is appointed as a Faculty member in Remote Sensing and Tectonic Geomorphology. He is also teaching the above-mentioned subjects to graduate students of the “Natural Hazards Prevention and Management”, “Geography & Environment”, “Oceanography” and “Ecology and Biodiversity Management” post-graduate programs.

He has extensive experience in processing satellite data, managing GIS and Web-GIS databases, creating 3D models and virtual scenes by using state-of-the art scientific software and by developing own utilities when necessary. His scientific interests include Airborne and Terrestrial LiDAR data interpretation, UAV data acquisition and processing, active tectonics, coastline displacement and high precision geodetic techniques.  His skills were also appreciated by the Hellenic Air Force as he worked for the National Center of Space Applications during his military service (for almost 20 months).

He has been a partner of several research groups taking over more than 30 research projects in which he was in charge of the satellite imagery acquisition and interpretation as well as the geo-database design and development. His research work (more than 150 papers) has been published in high impact factor international scientific journals (>83.35 total impact points) or conference proceedings, which have been cited more than 550 times (h-index 12) -last updated Jul2021.
