6.Byzantine Hymnology and Music (MSc course]

The cognitive object of the course includes the study of church music and hymnology from the ancient times of the Church up to the present day. The three periods of Byzantine Melos (old, middle and new) will be studied, the characteristics of the church music of Byzantium (systematization and reform of the musical notation, etc.), the forms of the hymns (harmonies, tropes, stocks, rules, etc.) as well as the work of the great composers and melodies of the Orthodox East. The aim of this course is to expand the knowledge of postgraduate students in relation to the history and theology of Byzantine hymnography and music, as well as their understanding of its liturgical, mystical and reductive character.
