OBJECTIVES
Exploration of the Earth’s interior is a fundamental disciplinary of Geosciences. Objective of these lectures is comprehension of modern seismological methods to resolve the three dimensional structure of the Earth at local, regional and global scale. The methods presented are based on fundamental properties of body and surface seismic waves generated by passive sources (natural earthquakes).
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcome defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
1. Identify and describe seismic phases of seismic recordings from local, regional and teleseismic distances.
2. Comprehensive knowledge of the main discontinuities of the Earth’s interior.
3. Identification of continental/oceanic crust affinity by studying the properties of seismic waves.
4. Knowledge of methods for detecting major crustal discontinuities such as Conrad and Moho.
5. Knowledge of methods for investigating the deep structure of the Earth down to the core.
6. Interpretation of one dimensional models of seismic velocities at local, regional and global scale.
7. Basic knowledge of seismic Tomography methods and interpretation of three-dimensional seismic velocity anomalies at local, regional and global scale.
