Curriculum Vitae

Gerassimos D. Pagratis (Corfu, 1970) is Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Department of Italian Language and Literature) where he teaches History of the Italian States (early modern and modern history) and History of the Venetian Rule in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as Social and Economic History at the Hellenic Open University. His main research interests are related to the early modern history of Venice, the history of the maritime enterprises of Greeks subjects of Venice, the history of the catholic monastic orders in the Venetian territories in the Levant, the social and economic history of the Septinsular Republic (1800-1807).

Ηe studied Classical Philology at the University of Lecce (Italy) and Medieval & Modern Greek Philology at the Department of Philology of the School of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 2001 he completed his PhD degree in the Department of History of the Ionian University on the dissertation "Maritime Trade in Venetian-Ruled Corfu: 1496-1538". He was postdoctoral researcher at the same Department working on the research project “Trade and Shipping in the Ionian Islands during the Napoleonic Wars" (2003-2004). In 2008 he was visiting research scholar at Queens College City University of New York (CUNY) (funded by the Fulbright Foundation), on the topic «The special development of American merchant shipping in the most important ports of the Ottoman Empire during the Napoleonic Wars and particularly before and after the American Navy’s clash with the Barbary corsairs».

Since 2016 he is Director of the Master Degree Programme in Greek-Italian Studies: History, Literature and Classical Tradition, since 2020 he is Head of the Department of Italian Language and Literature (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), and since 2021 he is Director of the Laboratory in Italian History and Historiography.
