He received the Dipl.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Athens, in 1998 and 2006, respectively. During 1997–1998, he was occupied with national service. From 1999 to 2006, he was a Research Assistant with the Electron Beam, Plasma, and Nonlinear Optics Laboratory, National Technical University of Athens. During 2006-2012, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens. From 2013 until 2021, he was a Research Scientist at the Institute for Pulsed Power and Microwave Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. Since 2022 he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

His research interests include the physics of interaction of particles with electromagnetic fields (with emphasis on the interaction of electron beams with high-frequency electromagnetic fields in microwave sources) and the development of pertinent mathematical models and numerical codes, the design, simulation, development, and experimental testing of gyrotrons, and the physics and technology of the electron cyclotron heating and current drive system in fusion reactors.

Dr. Avramidis is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
