Katherine M. Pappas is Associate Professor of Genetics – Molecular Microbial Genetics in the Faculty of Biology, University of Athens (NKUA) and Head of the Department of Genetics & Biotechnology, Faculty of Biology, NKUA (2022-2023). She coordinates courses in the under- and the post-graduate Program of Studies of the Faculty of Biology; i.e., ‘Genetics’, ‘Molecular Genetics’, ‘Biotechnology’ and ‘Microbial Biotechnology’. She is a founding member of the NKUA Center of Excellence in Basic Sciences and the NKUA Research Institute ‘Biotechnology, Bioeconomy, Biosustainability (Bio3)’, member of the NKUA Committee for Gender Equality in Sciences, and of multiple administrative committees in the Faculty of Biology. She has served as member of the NKUA Senate, as Board Member and Secretary in the Hellenic Scientific Society ‘MikroBioKosmos’ (MBK), as International Mentor, Future Leaders Mentorship Fellow, and Country Ambassador to Greece for the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), as Scientific Committee member for the National Food Authority (EFET) and as consultant to the Hellenic Educational Institute, Ministry of Education. Research-wise, and after completing her post-doctoral studies and a two-year bilateral EU-funded research collaboration with Cornell University, Ithaca NY, she has been Primary Investigator and/or network member in over twenty competitively awarded EU and national research programs since 2006, and a PI for the US Department of Energy, Office of Science, since 2008. Has been member of 11 Scientific Societies; Organizer and Chair in multiple national and international Conferences; high-impact journal editor and article reviewer; institutional, research program and educational evaluator for Greece, the UK and the EU. Author of many articles and book chapters in top ranked journals (Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Reviews, among others) and recipient of three National Scholarships Foundation (IKY) Awards of Excellence and a Fulbright Foundation Award (2023-2024). Born to a US and a Greek citizen; married with two children born in 2003 and 2004.
