This is an exciting time for 5G, which is expected to deliver higher speeds and support revolutionary new use cases, services and applications to connect people and things. The remarkable evolution of communication infrastructure is driven by cutting-edge research. Building on recent advances in Ethernet fronthauling, the EU-funded 5G-COMPLETE project will combine a series of key technologies under a unique architectural proposition. Specifically, it will combine compute and storage resource functionality over a unified ultrahigh capacity converged digital/analog fiber-wireless (FiWi) radio access network (RAN). This will revolutionise the 5G architecture. This will be tested in scalable lab and field-trial demonstrators in France (Lannion), Greece (Athens), and the UK (Bristol). New business models and novel research opportunities will be available.
