Prokopios Magiatis, Ph.D., M.Sc., is associate Professor of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Athens, Greece. He graduated from the same Faculty in 1994 and defended his PhD in 2000. In 2001, he did his postdoctoral research in the Curie Institute in Paris. In 2011 he worked as a visiting professor in the University of California, Davis and he is currently collaborating with the UC Davis Olive center. In 2009 he was awarded with the Egon-Stahl silver medal as the top scientist under 40 years old in the field of natural products chemistry and pharmacology. His research is focused on the isolation, chemical synthesis and bioactivity of natural products especially those reported in ancient medical texts. In the last years his research is focused on the study of olive oil and olive products and the development of new analytical tools for the measurement of bioactive compounds like oleocanthal in olive oil. He is also studying microbial metabolites related to Aryl hydrocarbon Receptor and their relation with the development of human diseases. He has invented five natural products derivatives that are commercially available as pharmacological tools.
