ASMA (Assistance for students in Singing and Music Aesthetics)

The ASMA (https://asma.music.uoa.gr/the-project/) project involves original and innovative research on the social and aesthetic importance of student vocal training, which will lead to the development of a modern platform with interactive applications in order to assist teaching singing in elementary school. Vocal cultivation is a thriving research-field of major importance, because the act of singing develops the students’ sense of participation and social integration both within the school environment and in the real-world. The act of singing as an object of aesthetic creation for children is not only a means for expressing their feelings and shaping their personality, but also a channel for communication on an intercultural level. The individualized character of vocal training is non-applicable to current elementary school curricula, due to the limited duration and non-private nature of music courses.

As a result, new technologies assisting the development of modern teaching methodologies are necessary. This research will catalog all possible aspects making proper vocal training in elementary schools a challenging task, such as vocal exercises, familiarity with the physiology and functionality of the human voice, and the identification of parameters related to vocal quality, and use this data for the development of new educational tools. More specifically, the ASMA platform will support the training for correct pronunciation, tonal precision, expressiveness, and musical rhythm in singing. It will be based on gamification, experiential learning, and visualization techniques, which lead to the desirable results through recreational, albeit educational processes, within collaborative and adaptive learning.
