Cultural and Music Anhtropology II

After having completed a review of the key concepts, methods, and subjects of study of cultural anthropology, in this course we focus οn the anthropological study of music. More specifically, we study music as a social and cultural phenomenon, that is, as a phenomenon which is shaped by, and shapes, social relations, cultural identities, meanings and practices. Through various ethnographic examples, we investigate the main theoretical orientations (e.g. interpretive phenomenology, theory of performance) and topics such as gender, ethnic and national identities, body and affect, globalization, et.c., which are central in the anthropological approaches of music. Special emphasis will be given on the ways in which anthropology studies contemporary popular music cultures (e.g. rock, pop, hip-hop, EDMCs) and contributes to the wide and interdisciplinary field of popular music studies.
