Metallurgy in the Early Bronze Age Aegean: archaeological & archaeometric approaches

Although metals were introduced in the Aegean as early as the Neolithic, their use shows dramatic increase during the Early Bronze Age, partly because of the superiority of metal objects and the technological advancement, but mainly due to the historical conditions of this particular period. This seminar deals with the bidirectional relationships between metallurgy and the socioeconomic developments observed in the EBA Aegean communities. From an archaeological point of view, issues to be addressed are the theoretical approaches to metallurgy, the types of artifacts, their archaeological context and their distribution across the Aegean. From an archaeometric point of view, issues to be addressed are the distribution of raw material sources, the various stages of the metallurgical process, and the analytical techniques for the study of metal artifacts. As an exercise, and if the number of students permit it, there will be the possibility of carrying out an experimental application of archaeometallurgical techniques with the participation of all students.
