Lecture at the Annual Cycle of the American Research Institute in Turkey
Music house-gatherings were a significant cultural institution in the social life of Ottoman Istanbul, providing a context for performance and transmission of music outside the court. In their late history, music house-gatherings functioned as a dynamic field for the negotiation of contemporary Turkish identity with regard to its Ottoman cultural heritage. This lecture follows the trajectory of music house-gatherings from the late Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic and examines its continuity and transformation.
