Short Biographical Note

Nektarios Vlahakis was born in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece, in 1971, got his B.Sc. in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1992), his M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Crete, Greece (1994) and his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the same University (1998). He has been a McCormick fellow at the Enrico Fermi Institute, Univ. of Chicago, U.S.A. (2000-2002) and a Research Associate at the Astronomy and Astrophysics Department, University of Chicago, U.S.A. (2002-2003). Since 2003 he is a faculty member at the Department of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and became Full Professor in 2020. He is the Director of the Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics since September 2020. His scientific interests include magnetohydrodynamics of astrophysical jets and accretions disks, AGN, GRBs, Pulsar winds, plasma equilibrium and stability. He has authored two textbooks and more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers that have been cited more than 3000 times by other researchers. He is a member of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.), the European Astronomical Society (EAS), and the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
