 Vassiliki STATHOKOSTA is an Ass. Prof. Dr. of “Orthodox Theology and Ecumenical Movement” in the Department of Theology, Theological School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Studies:

She studied Systematic and Ecumenical Theology at:

-       the Department of Theology, Theological School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki;

-       the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey/University of Geneva;

-         the Theological School of Fribourg/Suisse.

Scholarships by:

a) the Permanent Representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the World Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches (Sept. 1993 – February 1994),

b) the World Council of Churches’ Committee for “Ecumenical Theological Education” (academic years 1994-1995),

c) the “Comite Catholique pour la Collaboration Culturelle” of the “Conseil Pontifical pour la promotion de l’ Unite des Chretiens” of the Roman Catholic Church,

d) the Greek Scholarship Foundation for Post-Doctoral Research [“Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών”, 2002-2003].

RESEARCH:

I. Doctoral Thesis

  • Doctoral thesis: The relationship between the Church of Greece and the World Council of Churches 1948-1961, based on the Archives of the WCC (PhD diss. in Greek, University of Thessaloniki: 1999). It was approved by the Faculty of Theology of Thessaloniki with grade A (Arista) and she was proclaimed a Doctor of Theology in April 2000.

II. Post-Doctoral Thesis

  • Post-doctoral research, under a scholarship by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (Ι.Κ.Υ.): The formation of the ecumenical relations in Greece. Issues of Proselytism and Religious Liberty in post-war Greece [“Ηδιαμόρφωση των οικουμενικών σχέσεων στην Ελλάδα. Ζητήματα προσηλυτισμού και θρησκευτικής ελευθερίας στη μεταπολεμική Ελλάδα (από το 1948 έως τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’60”): Thessaloniki2003].

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

  • Scientific and Academic coordinator of the e-learning programme “Introduction in Orthodox Theology and Life” (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens: http://elearn.elke.uoa.gr/show_programs.php?catID=all&prID=249) (today – 2010);
  • Scientific Coordinator of the project of the Section of Patristic Studies, History of Dogma and Symbolic Theology under the title “Studies and monographs of Patristic Studies, History of Dogma, Symbolic Theology and Ecumenical Movement in Greek-speaking bibliography: 1837-2013” (2013-2014);
    • Researcher in the project “Digital Library of the Holy Bible”, Orthodox Center of Education and Culture of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki (Pylaia) (2001 Sept. - 2000 April);
    • Researcher at several European and Greek research projects with topics as Orthodox Church in the modern world; inter-Orthodox, inter-Christian dialogues; issues of gender; human rights; globalization and multiculturalism in relation to religion/s, national identity etc. (today – 1992).

Teaching:

    today - 2009 May:

After her election by the Faculty of Theology (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), she works as a Faculty Member of the Section of Patristic Studies, History of Dogma and Symbolic Theology, of the same University. Her specialty is “Orthodox Theology and Ecumenical Movement”.

  • She teaches the following courses:

- “Symbolic Theology and Ecumenical Movement”;

- “Orthodox Ecclesiology and Inter-Christian Dialogue”;

- “Issues of Ecclesiology in the frame of the ecumenical movement”;

- “Inter-Christian Relations in Greece”.

  • She also teaches in the Programme of Master Studies the following courses of specialization”:

- “Issues of the Ecumenical Movement A΄”

- “Issues of the Ecumenical Movement B΄”and

- “Issues of Orthodox Theology and the Ecumenical Movement” 

    2009 May - 2001 Sept.:

- teacher at Higher Education (High School and Lyceum) teaching Theology and Religion and

- organizer and coordinator of environmental and gender-relations projects at school in cooperation with the “Center of Research for Issues of Equality” (ΚΕΘΙ) of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

- educator to educational courses for theologians of Higher Education on teaching Theology and Religion at High School and Lyceum, organized by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

Current Research Interests:

Ecclesiology; Bilateral Theological Dialogues; Ecumenical Reception; Orthodox Ecumenical Figures; Ecumenical Theological Education; Receptive Ecumenism; Theology and Humans Rights; Religious Freedom, Mission and issues of Proselytism.

She has published numerous studies concerning the Orthodox Church and Theology in the Ecumenical Movement; issues of Ecclesiology and inter-Christian dialogues; issues of proselytism and religious liberty; human rights and freedom of beliefs; the women’s issue in Orthodoxy and in Ecumenical Movement;

Nominated by the Church of Greece as member of the Thematic Reference Group of CEC for “Human Rights”;
