CV

Antonios Stamatakis was born in Greece in 1971. He obtained his PhD in Biology (Neurobiology-Physiology) from Crete University, Greece, in 2000, and has been a faculty member in the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) since 2005. He is among the very few faculty members in Greece doing research on Behavioural Neuroscience and teaching Neuroscience at the undergraduate and graduate level.

His scientific interests are in the field of the biological base of behaviour (using rodents as experimental animals), including epigenetic effects of early life experiences on neonatal and adult brain, with special emphasis on prefrontal cortex and amygdala structure and function. Moreover, he studies mechanisms of learning and memory, maternal behaviour, and sex differences in stress responses. He has employed a variety of experimental approaches ranging from neurochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, image analysis to a wide range of behavioural tasks for animals (rodents and birds).

He is currently supervising 3 PhDs, he has supervised 3 and co-supervised 6 PhD theses, all with topics in Neuroscience; he has published 62 articles in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals and he has also translated scientific books in Greek. He is currently Principal Investigator in one national research grant (ELIDEK). He has been the Principal Investigator in 5 Scientific Projects funded by the University of Athens, he has participated as Senior Scientist in 3 Scientific Projects funded by the Greek General Secretariat of Research and Technology as well as in 1 funded by The Latsis Foundation and is now participating in a Horizon 2020 consortium (MIS: 634880). He has received both national and international awards for his studies and research.

He has extensive teaching experience both at the undergraduate and graduate level as he has been teaching since 2005 classes such as Neurosciences, Biology of Behaviour, Psychoneuroendocrinology, Biology & Psychophysiology of Stress, Neurobiology of Learning & Memory, Cell Biology, Physiology. He is currently member of the Administrative Committees of the “Athens International Master’s Program in Neurosciences”, NKUA. This program is NENS affiliated. Professor Stamatakis serves as liaison with NENS. In addition he is a member of the Administrative committee of the “Clinical Biochemistry-Molecular Diagnostics”(NKUA) and “Clinical Nursing”(NKUA) master’s programs.

He was the local organizer of the 10th ISN Advanced School of Neurochemistry "Molecular basis of higher cognitive functions" in 2011 in Delphi, Greece; he co-organized the ISN School in cooperation with FENS on Local protein synthesis in axons and dendrites, in 2013 in Kolymbari, Crete, Greece. He has co-organized (Local Organizing Committee) the 41st Meeting of EBBS in 2009 in Rhodes, Greece, and he was member of the Organizing Committee of the 45th, 47th and 48th Meetings of EBBS in 2015 (Verona, Italy), 2017 (Bilbao, Spain) and 2019 (Prague, Czech Rep.). He was co-organizer of meetings of the Hellenic Society for Neuroscience (HSfN) in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2015 and President of the organizing committee for the 2017 HSfN meeting.

He was member of the "Advanced School Sub-Committee" of the International Society for Neurochemistry from 2011 until 2017. He has served as member of the Governing Council of the Hellenic Society for Neuroscience from 2007 until 2013, as Secretary General from 2013 until 2015 and from 2015 until 2017 as President of this Society. He was member of the Governing Council of IBRO and FENS (2015-2017). He has served as member of the Executive Committee of the European Brain and Behaviour Society (EBBS) (2012-2014) and as Secretary General of this Society for two terms 2014-2016 and 2017-2020.
