Spiros Gardelis was born in Athens in 1966. He earned his B.Sc. in Physics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1988, followed by an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, England, in 1989 and 1993, respectively. Between 1993 and 2000, he worked as a Research Associate at the University of Manchester, the University of Warwick, and the Cavendish Laboratory (Department of Physics) at the University of Cambridge.
From 2000 to 2001, he completed his military service. Between 2001 and 2004, he served as a Research Associate at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology–Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete, while also teaching as a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science at the University of Crete.
From 2005 to 2015, he was a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” in Athens. Since 2015, he has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. From 2019 to 2022, he served as Director of the Solid State Physics Laboratory. From 2023-2025, he served as Director of the Condensed Matter Physics Section and a member of the Board of Directors of the Physics Department. He was also a member of the department’s Internal Evaluation Committee and the Departmental Assembly.
His research interests encompass semiconductor physics, nanoelectronics, photonics, plasmonics, spintronics, MEMS, and solar cell applications. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, which have collectively received more than 2,500 citations.
