Short Biographical Note

Sarantis Sofianos, born in Corfu, holds a B.A. in Physics (University of Athens) and a PhD in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography (University of Miami, USA). After his studies, he participated as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Physics (University of Athens) in international and national research programs focusing on Physical Oceanography. He has been serving at the Department of Physics of the University of Athens since 2009, as Lecturer, Assistant Professor (2015), Associate Professor (2020) and Professor (2025). Since 2019, he has been an associate faculty member of the Institute of Computational Mathematics, Foundation for Technology and Research (FORTH) and since 2009 of the Institute of Accelerator Systems and Applications (IESA). He teaches courses in the subject of Fluid Dynamics and Physical Oceanography at undergraduate and graduate levels, has supervised 4 doctoral theses and 3 more in progress, 39 graduate and many undergraduate diploma theses. His research activities include ocean dynamics and interactions with the atmosphere, with emphasis on semi-enclosed basins, climate variability and the response of ocean systems, numerical models in Physical Oceanography, operational oceanography and applications in the protection of the marine environment. He participated in over 30 research projects and as principal investigator in 15 projects. He has over 70 publications in international journals and books and 120 publications in international refereed conferences. He is the coordinator of the Ocean Physics and Modeling (OPAM) group of the University of Athens, the operational forecasting system ALERMO (http://www.oc.phys.uoa.gr/oceanf.html), the sea wave forecasting system TRITON (http://www.oc.phys.uoa.gr/dok1.html), the DIAVLOS oil spill forecasting system (http://diavlos.oc.phys.uoa.gr) and participated in field experiments in various regions of the world ocean, as a research team member or mission leader.
