Sarantis Sofianos, born in Kerkyra (Corfu), Greece, got his B.Sc. in Physics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece (1994). During 1994-95 he worked as research assistant at NKUA, when he participated in his first oceanographic cruises. In 1995 he was accepted as a graduate student at the University of Miami (UM), USA, where he was awarded the Rosenstiel Fellowship. In 2000 he received his Ph.D. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from UM. From 2000 to 2009 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at NKUA, UM and the Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications and he coordinated his first projects, as a principal investigator. Since 2009 he is a faculty member of the Department of Physics, NKUA, and became Associate Professor in 2020. His scientific interests include ocean dynamics and air-sea interactions with emphasis on semi-enclosed basins, ocean forecasting and climate variability of the oceanic systems. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters (more than 1500 citations by other researchers) and 120 contributions in conference proceedings. He has participated in 35 projects (he was the principal investigator of the project or NKUA coordinator in 19). From 2012 he is a Member of the General Assembly of the Mediterranean Operational Network for the Global Ocean Observing System(MONGOOS) and coordinated the Ocean Modeling Working Group. He is currently the Graduate Studies Director of the Inter-institutional Graduate Program in Oceanography and Management of the Marine Environment. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics) since 2019.
