European Connected Factory Platform for Agile Manufacturing

Mass production led to steep decreases in the costs of goods for consumers around the world. The 'lot size one' (LSO) scenario – literally referring to the production of one item in one lot – seems like the least efficient manufacturing concept around. However, it turns out that mass production has a lot of downsides, including large amounts of stock of both components and finished products that end up in a secondary liquidation market, sold at drastically reduced prices.

High-tech and affordable 5G network roll-out to every corner

5G networks are fast becoming a reality, with big vendors developing 5G network equipment and mobile network operators preparing its commercialisation. However, there is an urgent need to support solutions tailored to specific types of networks. The EU-funded Affordable5G project is developing a 5G network that will offer an integrated and affordable solution covering the needs of private and enterprise networks.

Holistic, Omnipresent, Resilient Services for future 6G Wireless and Computing Ecosystems

The 6G technologies, which benefit from software development, speeds in Gb/s, and communication examples in THz, open opportunities for the development of new and innovative network management strategies while navigating the evolution toward distribution. New software-based paradigms for the architecture and operation of future connectivity platforms embrace computing characteristics such as automation and intelligence, trust, privacy, and security.

Open Autonomous programmable cloud appS & smart EdgE Sensors

The massive increase in device connectivity and the data generated has resulted in the multiplication of intelligent processing services for creating information and exploiting data in various ways. Currently, the most powerful data processing operates centrally in the cloud, which provides scalability and efficient resource allocation on demand. Centralized processing and hosting in the cloud, however, binds and limits services and applications to operate with restricted resources, as it relies on large, singular computational entities for the provision of:

Pressious Data Spaces – AIRegio

AI REGIO is a collaborative network of 13 regions and their corresponding Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) and Competence Centres, which actively involves regional authorities and agencies, with a portfolio of several thousand SMEs and representing 15% of EU GDP.

The Four Motors of Europe regions:

  • Lombardy

  • Baden-Württemberg

Towards a functional continuum operating system

The continuous multiplication of new computing technologies and technologies related to sensing devices, as well as the ever-increasing demand for high-data-demand applications both at the network edges and in the cloud, lead to a paradigm shift in computing towards dynamic, intelligent, and continuous interconnection of resources from the Internet of Things, edges, and cloud into a unified computing system that creates a continuum. Many research initiatives aim at developing some form of management layer to appropriately handle this continuum.

Trustworthy and Resilient Decentralised Intelligence for Edge Systems

The development and management of distributed systems is a complex task that requires expertise in many areas. This complexity increases significantly in swarm systems, which are highly dynamic and heterogeneous, requiring decentralized solutions that adapt to highly dynamic system conditions. The TARDIS project focuses on supporting the proper and efficient development of applications for swarms and decentralized distributed systems by combining a new programming standard with a toolkit to support the development and execution of applications.

Zero Defect Manufacturing Platform

Factories with a high interoperability level require an extendable platform to reach the goal of zero defects. The EU-funded ZDMP project is combining state-of-the-art zero-defect technological approaches based on commercial-grade or open-source software, with built-in software for any gaps, and with an open development approach and app store. It will allow end users to connect their system to benefit from the features of the platform, including product and production quality assurance.
