Nikos was born in Athens and graduated from the Department of Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (BSc). He received his PhD from the School of Chemistry, University of Southampton, UK under the supervision of Prof A.A. Danopoulos, followed by a short PDRA in collaboration with Prof Bill Levason and Prof Gill Reid. After a short stint at the University of St-Andrews (3/2007-11/2007) where he conducted research on artificial metallo-enzyme, he moved to the University of Bristol (11/2007-5/2010), to explore metal-boron bonds as reversible hydrogen shuttles in catalysis.
He then moved to the University of Sussex to investigate low valent f-block organometallics (actinides and lanthanides) and their application in small molecule activation (Prof F. Geoffrey N. Cloke FRS) and molecular magnetism (Prof R. A. Layfield)
In March 2022 he joined the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry at his alma-mater at NKUA as an assistant professor. His research interests include:- Proton Coupled Electron Transfer in organometallic complexes as a means to access rare terminal oxo complexes and promote small molecule activation
- Low valent and coordinatevely unsaturated organometallic complexes of the d and f block and their reactivity
- Electrochemistry of organometallic complexes
- Bismuth organometalllics
- X-ray Crystallography and molecular structure
His work has been published in 56 peer-reviewed papers (h-index: 22 (Web of Science)) and facets of his research have received funding from the HFRI and the RSC
