Εξετάζει την εμφάνιση σημαντικών θεμάτων: της εκθετικής ανάπτυξης -από τον Όιλερ και τον  Μάλθους μέχρι την πολιτική ενός παιδιού της Κίνας-, της ανάπτυξης στοχαστικών μοντέλων -από τους νόμους του Μέντελ και το πρόβλημα της εξάλειψης των επωνύμων μέχρι τη θεωρία της διήθησης για την εξάπλωση των επιδημιών-, και τους χαοτικούς πληθυσμούς, όπου ο ντετερμινισμός και η τυχαιότητα διαπλέκονται.
