Κεφάλαιο 1.1. Για την επιστηµονική µέθοδο: ιστορική διαδροµή. Από τον επιστηµονικό θετικισµό στον µεταθετικισµό. 1.1.1. Λογικός Θετικισµός. Στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα κάνει την εµφάνισή του στη Βιέννη, το ρεύµα του Λογικού Θετικισµού, που ταυτίζεται µε µια οµάδα φιλοσόφων και διανοητών που είναι γνωστή ως ο «Κύκλος της Βιέννης». Το 1929 ο κύκλος της Βιέννης δηµοσίευσε τη διακήρυξή του µε τίτλο «Η επιστηµονική αντίληψη του κόσµου» γνωστοποιώντας στο κοινό τις φιλοσοφικές απόψεις του. Οι λογικοί θετικιστές απορρίπτουν τη µεταφυσική και προσπαθούν να αναγάγουν όλες τις δηλώσεις και τις προτάσεις στην καθαρή λογική. Ιδρυτές του θεωρούνται οι Hahn, Frank και Neurath. Η προσθήκη των Carnap, Feigl, Schlick κ.ά. οδήγησε στη συγκρότηση του «Κύκλου της Βιέννης», που αποτέλεσε την οµάδα που ταυτίστηκε και προώθησε τον Λογικό Θετικισµό.

In June 1946 George Seferis, the eminent Greek poet who was goingto become the Nobel-laureate patriarch of Greek modernist poetry by1963, witnessed the re-excavation of the statues and vases until thenhidden in the vaults of the National Museum in Athens in order toprevent their damage, or looting, by the Germans during the occupation.As he observes the bronze statue of Zeus, a fifth-century BC work thatis still considered one of the masterpieces in the Museum’s collectionand of Greek art at large, the poet fantasizes the god’s lovemaking witha woman whom Seferis himself “would love”, as he unashamedly informsus in his diary from that day. In the paper, I use the concept ofhomosociality in order to explore the ways in which Seferis and manyof his contemporaries view classical antiquity and proceed to deploy itas a bio-political tool in order to claim a centralized role in Greekintellectual and political life. To this end, I re-visit Seferis’s two chief“archaeological” poems –The King of Asine and Engomi – in an effortto investigate the ways in which his sensory archaeologies manifestthemselves.

Στο παρόν παρουσιάζεται η έρευνα ενός προγράμματος σχολικής δραστηριότητας (πολιτιστικών θεμάτων) που βασίζεται στη δημιουργία μαθητικής ραδιοφωνικής ομάδας στο 1ο Γενικό Λύκειο Ηρακλείου Αττικής και στην εβδομαδιαία παραγωγή τρίωρης εκπομπής στον Δημοτικό Ραδιοφωνικό Σταθμό, Επικοινωνία 94 Fm, με τίτλο «Σχολικά Παράσιτα». Σκοπός της έρευνας είναι η αξιολόγηση των μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων του προγράμματος και η βιωσιμότητα αυτών με βάση τη θεωρία της αναστοχαστικότητας, της βιωματικής-επικοινωνιακής παιδαγωγικής και της μετασχηματιστικής εκπαίδευσης. Με στοιχεία έρευνας-δράσης οι εκπαιδευτικοί από την πρώτη σχολική χρονιά παρακολούθησαν και διαμορφωτικά αξιολόγησαν την ανάπτυξη του προγράμματος, στο οποίο συμμετείχαν περισσότεροι από 300 μαθητές (το πρόγραμμα συνεχίζεται μέχρι σήμερα). Στο παρόν παρουσιάζονται συνοπτικά τα αποτελέσματα και συμπεράσματα της έρευνας από το 2010 έως 2013, τα οποία υπογραμμίζουν την υψηλή παιδαγωγική αποτελεσματικότητα του προγράμματος σε επίπεδο ανάπτυξης δεξιοτήτων πρωτίστως και δευτερευόντως απόκτησης νέων γνώσεων καθώς και τη μακροπρόθεσμη διατήρηση της γνώσης, όπως αυτή θεωρήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος με όρους κονστρουκτιβιστικής προσέγγισης της μάθησης.

In this chapter, we focus on recommender systems that are enhanced with social information in the form of trust statements between their users. The trust information may be processed in a number of ways, including the random walks in the social graph, where every step in the walk is chosen almost uniformly at random from the available choices. Although this strategy yields satisfactory results in terms of the novelty and the diversity of the produced recommendations, it exhibits poor accuracy because it does not fully exploit the similarity information among users and items. Our work tries to model user-to-user and user-to-item relation as a probability distribution using a novel approach based on Rejection Sampling in order to decide its next step (biased random walk). Some initial results on reference datasets indicate that a satisfying trade-off among accuracy, novelty, and diversity is achieved.

In this paper we take as our point of departure Kostas Gavroglu and Yorgos Goudaroulis’s insight that, in the process of describing and explaining novel phenomena, scientific concepts are taken “out of” their original theoretical context, acquire additional meaning, and become relatively autonomous. We first present their account of how concepts are re-contextualized and, in the process, extended and/or revised. We then situate it within its philosophical context, and discuss how it broke with a long-standing philosophical tradition about concepts. Finally, we argue that recent developments in science studies can flesh out and vindicate the “concepts out of contexts” idea. In particular, historical and philosophical studies of experimentation and cognitive-historical studies of modeling practices indicate various ways in which concepts are formed and articulated “out of context”.

El objeto del presente trabajo es buscar las diferencias en la transferencia léxica de la producción escrita en dos grupos de estudiantes griegos de español diferentes que tienen el mismo nivel lingüístico en lengua extranjera pero siguen un enfoque educativo distinto: aprendizaje tradicional de lengua extranjera frente al aprendizaje integrado de contenido. Para ello, han realizado una prueba de producción escrita, y después se han localizado sus errores léxicos (formales y semánticos) debidos a la transferencia léxica. El método de investigación que se ha utilizado para identificar dichos errores es el Análisis de Errores. Los resultados han mostrado que la producción escrita del grupo que sigue un acercamiento integrado de contenido presenta menos errores léxicos formales debidos a la transferencia léxica que la del grupo que sigue el enfoque tradicional. Mientras que los errores léxicos semánticos generados por la transferencia léxica tienen una presencia más fuerte en la producción escrita del grupo que sigue el aprendizaje integrado de contenido. La explicación se basa en el tipo y la cantidad de exposición a la lengua extranjera.  

Through the eyes of western women of the 18th and 19th centuries, this paper discusses the Ottoman slavery institution and 'the real position of women in the religious system of Islam' (Garnett 1895: 61).  Focusing on primary sources, first-hand accounts of European women travel writers, authors and journalists in Ottoman territories and principally in Asia Minor (Turkey), this article confirms that all the harem inmates were women of different nations and races: Islamized slaves, liberated slaves and descendants of slaves. Western women, in their intimate contacts with the harem inmates—free and slave—discuss the Ottoman dynasty’s reproductive politics, forced abortion, marriage, divorce, veiling or Muslim women’s attire,  slave rights and social mobility, including requirements for slave liberation. This researcher concludes that the Multiethnic-Multiracial Harem Slavery Institution was the collective segregation, confinement or enslavement of the female gender in one specific space (household/harem), as one collective identity since all the women—slave and free—shared or legally belonged to one man or master: sultan, grand vizier, vizier, pacha, etc. Keywords: slavery, sexual slavery, social mobility, polygyny, eunuchs, children’s harem, seraglio, marriage, divorce, veiling ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When citing: Kamberidou, I. This chapter has shown that the multiethnic harem slavery institution was the Ottoman system’s primary socialization agent and an indispensable part of its self­-reproduction. It has contributed to the discourse on sexual slavery, primarily through the first-hand accounts of western women and harem inmates of the 19th century. It has shown that multiethnic–multiracial slavery was vital for the Ottoman economy and social system and provided a means of social integration-assimilation and social mobility: status and political power. Sexual slavery was a central part of the slave system and slaves of both genders were easily integrated into Ottoman society, eventually becoming free Muslims.       Mainly through the eyes of western women and harem inmates of the 19th century, corroborating that the harem system was based on slavery, this chapter has contributed additional evidence confirming that:  firstly, the expansionist views of Islam and the institution of slavery resulted in the multiethnic composition of the Ottoman households: harems and selemliks. Secondly, an Ottoman harem— especially that of the elite and so-called middle-class—was made up of women and children from different nations: Islamized slaves, liberated slaves and descendants of slaves, including islamized eunuchs. Important earthquakes are often accompanied by vertical-land displacements. Therefore in coastal areas they may result in rapid changes of the relative sea level. An essential tool for the study of coastal paleoseismicity is the identification of fossil paleoshorelines, paying special attention to sea-level indicators that are consistent or provide evidence of rapid relative sea-level change.Here, different types of sea-level indicators that are often used in literature in order to determine changes in fossil shorelines are summarized. Information is also provided regarding four case studies of important earthquakes that occurred in Greece (in AD 365, 1953, and 1956) and in Japan (in 1923).

Because changes in sea level may have a great impact on the distribution of mineral resources, the exploration and exploiting of these resources should not ignore the changes in sea level that may have occurred in the past in the area considered. The study of relative sea-level changes is an essential element of ocean observation and technological advances are often necessary to improve this study that includes the determination of levels (elevation or depth), chronological estimations, and the identification of appropriate sea-level indicators.Indicators of fossil or present-day sea-level positions are the most important elements for a sea-level reconstruction, because they provide information not only on the former level but also on the accuracy of the reconstruction.A classification is proposed of the main criteria that can be used to deduce appropriate sea-level indicators from geomorphological, stratigraphical, biological or archeological coastal data. Two cases studies are used as examples of sea-level reconstructions that may be useful to clarify the geology in certain areas, or to coastal engineering and coastal protection: (1) on the impact of the recent sea-level rise in the interpretation of sea-level indicators; and (2) on the foreseeable impacts of the predicted near-future sea-level rise on the coasts of NE Italy.

If solitude, as a state of being alone, is a basic human need equally important to attachment and belonging, it is necessary to explore its multiple positive contributions to children's and adolescents' development. However, this type of solitude is a relatively neglected research area in these age periods. Research evidence on the existence, significance, and developmental course of positive aloneness experiences is the focus of this chapter beginning with some clarifications on the various concepts of aloneness (i.e., loneliness, aloneness, solitude, attitude toward aloneness, privacy). Next, research is reviewed on assessment of aloneness and solitude; understanding and content of solitude; assessment of aloneness and solitude; amount, context, and affect of time alone; attitude toward aloneness; the links between solitude and adjustment; the associations between solitude and strategies of coping with loneliness; and the associations between solitude and other aloneness concepts. Data on gender differences also are discussed. Finally, suggestions are offered fo rfuture research on this type of solitude in childhood and adolescence.

Recent work in the field of English as a Lingua Franca (henceforth ELF) has been focused on defining, delineating, and clarifying the nature of ELF. While some work has addressed issues of teacher education and training (see below for a review), we have yet to see a comprehensive proposal that aims both to educate English as a Foreign Language (henceforth EFL) or English as a Second Language (henceforth ESL) teachers about ELF and to engage them in developing, teaching, and evaluating ELF-aware lessons in their own teaching context.

Relativistic jets can be modeled as magnetohydrodynamic flows. We analyze the related equations and discuss the involved acceleration mechanisms, their relation to the collimation, to the jet confinement by its environment, and to possible rarefaction waves triggered by pressure imbalances.

Στο παρόν επιχειρείται η συνάντηση θεολογίας και επιστήμης στο πλαίσιο της διδακτικής μεθοδολογίας μαθημάτων της Πρωτοβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης. Προτείνεται η πολύπλευρη μελέτη εννοιών (διαθεματικότητα) και η σύνδεση επιστημονικών πεδίων (διεπιστημονικότητα), όπως των μαθηματικών και της θεολογίας ώστε οι μαθητές να αντιλαμβάνονται επαρκώς τη συνάφεια των αντικειμένων και τη συμβολή τους σε όλες τις εκφάνσεις της ζωής. Προτείνονται θεολογικά κείμενα που μπορούν να αξιοποιηθούν για τη διδασκαλία μαθηματικών εννοιών, ώστε ο μαθητής να αντιμετωπίζει τη γνώση ως ενιαία ολότητα και σχετική με τη ζωή του.

Το ζήτημα της κατάρτισης του διδακτικού προσωπικού δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης είναιευρύ και πολυεπίπεδο. Στην Ελλάδα, έχει απασχολήσει κυρίως την παιδαγωγική καικοινωνιολογική έρευνα, απότοκο της οποίας είναι μια πλούσια βιβλιογραφική παραγωγή. Οιιστορικές προσεγγίσεις, πιο περιορισμένες σε αριθμό, συνδέονται σε μεγάλο βαθμό με τηνπανεπιστημιακή ιστοριογραφία. Αυτή η τελευταία εστιάζει κυρίως στη μελέτη τουπανεπιστημιακού θεσμού με κύριους άξονες τη λειτουργία του, τη συμβολή του στο δημόσιοβίο, τη φυσιογνωμία του διδακτικού προσωπικoύ, τη σύνθεση του φοιτητικού πληθυσμού˙εξετάζει επίσης, αν και σπανιότερα, την έμφυλη διάσταση της ιστορίας του. Ειδικότερα, οιμελέτες που ερευνούν επιμέρους καθηγητικές σχολές θέτουν στο επίκεντρο κυρίως ζητήματαπου αφορούν στην εκπαιδευτική λειτουργία, όπως είναι η συγκρότηση γνωστικώναντικειμένων, τα προγράμματα σπουδών, η φιλοσοφία τους και ο ρόλος τους στηδιαμόρφωση της εθνικής ιδεολογίας, οι μέθοδοι διδασκαλίας.Παρά τη γονιμότητα αυτής της ιστοριογραφικής δραστηριότητας, υπάρχουν πλευρές τηςιστορικής πορείας του ελληνικού πανεπιστημιακού θεσμού, που παραμένουν ανεξερεύνητες.Η εργασία αυτή αφορά σε ένα ζήτημα ανοικτό: την κατάρτιση των εκπαιδευτικών ξένης γλώσσας. Στην ελληνικήβιβλιογραφία, η ιστορία της εκπαίδευσης των καθηγητών αυτής της ειδικότητας αγνοείταιαπό τη μεγάλη πλειοψηφία των ευρύτερων ερευνών της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης. Θίγεταιδε, εκτός ελαχίστων εξαιρέσεων, σε πολύ περιορισμένο βαθμό και εξαιρετικάαποσπασματικά σε μελέτες με κύριο αντικείμενο τη διδασκαλία των ξένων γλωσσών στηδημόσια δευτεροβάθμια ή τριτοβάθμια ελληνική εκπαίδευση.Η σχετική απουσία του ιστορικού ενδιαφέροντος για το θέμα ίσως συνδέεται με τηνιδιαιτερότητα που παρουσιάζει στην Ελλάδα η συγκρότηση των ξένων φιλολογιών καιπολιτισμών σε γνωστικό αντικείμενο πανεπιστημιακών σπουδών. Αυτή αποτυπώνεται στησχετικά πρόσφατη (εκκινώντας από τη δεκαετία του 1950) δημιουργία στη ΦιλοσοφικήΣχολή των Πανεπιστημίων Αθηνών και Θεσσαλονίκης ειδικών τμημάτων γι αυτό το σκοπό.Η καθυστέρηση/υστέρηση αυτή, αν και δεν αποτελεί ελληνική ιδιοτυπία, ξαφνιάζειδεδομένου ότι η γαλλική γλώσσα διδάσκεται στα δημόσια Ελληνικά σχολεία και Γυμνάσιαήδη από την ίδρυση του ελληνικού κράτους, η δε αγγλική και γερμανική, ουσιαστικά από τιςαρχές του 20ού αιώνα, στις εμπορικές κυρίως σχολές. Όμως ακριβώς επειδή οισυγκεκριμένες σπουδές άργησαν να ενταχθούν στον ακαδημαϊκό χώρο, η ιστορία τηςεκπαίδευσης του αντίστοιχου διδακτικού προσωπικού υπερβαίνει τα όρια εκείνης τουπανεπιστημίου καθότι, ανάλογα με την περίοδο που κάθε φορά εξετάζεται, διαμορφώνεται ήσυνδιαμορφώνεται από φορείς εξωπανεπιστημιακούς και μάλιστα ετεροεθνείς. Επομένως,δεδομένης της εμπλοκής ξένων εκπαιδευτικών ιδρυμάτων στην κατάρτιση Ελλήνωνδημοσίων λειτουργών, η γένεση του ζητήματος της επαγγελματικής μόρφωσης τωνκαθηγητών/τριών αυτής της ειδικότητας και η θεσμική πορεία του συνδιαλέγονται άμεσα μετην ευρύτερη πολιτική και διπλωματική συγκυρία. Η ιστορία της δημιουργίαςσυγκροτημένων δομών προετοιμασίας για τη διδασκαλία ξένων γλωσσών στη δημόσιαεκπαίδευση, στο μέτρο που συνδέεται κατ’ έναν τρόπο με τις έμφυλες μεταβολές πουπαρατηρούνται στη σύνθεση του συγκεκριμένου καθηγητικού σώματος, επιδέχεται και μίαακόμη ανάγνωση, η οποία προσδίδει μια επιπλέον διάσταση στο ζήτημα, εκείνης του φύλου.Στόχος της παρούσας εισήγησης είναι η οριοθέτηση ενός πολυδιάστατου πεδίου έρευνας, πουεγγράφεται, λοιπόν, στα όρια της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης, της διπλωματικής ιστορίας αλλάκαι εκείνης του φύλου. Η τριπλή αυτή προσέγγιση υπαγορεύεται από την αναγκαιότηταδιεύρυνσης και σε άλλους ερευνητικούς χώρους του πεδίου παρατήρησης ενός ζητήματοςπου εντάσσεται, βέβαια, καταρχήν, στο πλαίσιο της ελληνικής πανεπιστημιακής ιστορίας.Αναδεικνύει δε την πολλαπλότητα των επιπέδων της ιστορικής ανάλυσης και επιτρέπει τηνεισαγωγή μεθοδολογικών και ερμηνευτικών εργαλείων από διαφορετικά πεδία της ιστορικήςέρευνας. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, επιδιώκεται μια πρώτη ιστοριογραφική καταγραφή˙ μιααποτίμηση, τέλος, των προοπτικών-οπτικών που ανοίγονται για την έρευνα στην ιστορία τηςεκπαίδευσης.

Στο άρθρο αυτό επιχειρείται η ανάπτυξη παιδαγωγικής θεωρίας για τη λειτουργική σχέση «Θεάτρου στην Εκπαίδευση» και σχολικής ηθικής αγωγής με βάση τη γνωσιακή επιστήμη. Αναδεικνύονται, έτσι, οι διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις της γνώσης στο πλαίσιο της εκπαίδευσης (γνωστικής και οικολογικής) και το φιλοσοφικό και επιστημονικό υπόβαθρό τους. Η ένταξη του «Θεάτρου στην Εκπαίδευση», μέσω του Προγράμματος Σπουδών, στην καθημερινότητα του σχολείου και στη μαθησιακή διαδικασία μπορεί να αποτελέσει εργαλείο απελευθέρωσης, αλλά και υποδούλωσης ανάλογα με τους φιλοσοφικούς και πολιτικούς προσανατολισμούς των υπεύθυνων της εκπαίδευσης (ειδικοί, εμπειρογνώμονες) και της εκπαιδευτικής πράξης στην τάξη (εκπαιδευτικοί). Στο παρόν μελετώνται ερευνητικά οι διαφορές μεταξύ των δύο προσεγγίσεων και γίνονται αναφορές στα εμπειρικά δεδομένα της Ελλάδας και άλλων χωρών που θεμελιώνουν την παιδαγωγική λειτουργικότητα του θεάτρου στην διαμόρφωση της προσωπικής ταυτότητας και του ήθους του μαθητή από την προσχολική και σε όλη τη διάρκεια της εκπαίδευσής του. Σκοπός είναι να απαντηθεί το βασικό ερώτημα που απασχολεί τον ερευνητή και προκαλεί κάθε ειδικό και εκπαιδευτικό να πάρει θέση, πριν συμφωνήσει, χωρίς πολλές διατυπώσεις, με την παιδαγωγική αξία του «Θεάτρου στην Εκπαίδευση»: Με ποιες παιδαγωγικές, φιλοσοφικές και πολιτικές προϋποθέσεις το θέατρο, ως ασφαλής, μαθητοκεντρική και χειραφετητική μέθοδος και τεχνική, μπορεί να ενταχθεί στην απελευθερωτική εκπαίδευση με σκοπό την ηθική αγωγή μέσω των μαθημάτων του Προγράμματος Σπουδών;

Στη παρούσα συλλογική προσπάθεια των ειδικών επιστημόνων και εμπειγνωμόνων, η συμβολή μας έγκειται στις ενότητες της Γ’ Λυκείου, οι οποίες περιλαμβάνουν τις έννοεις της Επιστήμης, της Τεχνολογία και της Γενετικής. Επιπλέον, υπήρξε συνεργασία και για την έννοια της Βιοηθικής της Β’ Λυκείου με τη συνάδελφο κ. Ρόη Ακανθοπούλου. Σημαντική είναι η  συμβολή του γράφοντος στη δημιουργία του Δειγματικού Σχεδίου Διδασκαλίας στην ενότητα Διλήμματα και στην έννοια της Γ’ Λυκείου ΓΕΝΕΤΙΚΗ και συγκεκριμένα στην προβολή ορθόδοξων βιοηθικολόγων στα προτεινόμενα φύλλα εργασίας.

Philip Roth is among the most critically acclaimed and widely read contemporary American writers. Considered as one of the masters of the art of the novel, he is also known for his engagement with and advocacy for the fiction of other writers. This important aspect of his work, although recognized by many critics, has consistently been ignored by others, until the very recent attribution of the 2013 PEN/Allen Foundation Literary Service Award. The award promotes an understanding of Roth as a highly literary and referential writer in continuation of a trend in criticism which, from the beginning of his career, has consistently attempted to read his fiction in dialogue with other fiction. Such a critical stance, however, stands in stark contrast to that which, traditionally, emphasizes Roth’s self-isolation from world literature. It is against this backdrop of critical discussion and in consonance with the former stance that the contributors to this collection seek to broaden an understanding of Roth’s fiction and to place him within both his national and international contexts of prior and contemporary writers. A book like this is long overdue because not many are aware of the numerous intersections between Philip Roth’s fiction and world literature. In highlighting these intersections and uneasy passages, this comparative approach offers an important contribution to Philip Roth studies as well as to comparative literary study in general. It builds on previous comparative scholarship on Philip Roth and seeks to broaden even further the crossings and concepts through which comparisons can be made and sustained. It covers new authors from world literature and extends analysis of previously studied authors. The fourteen chapters on this book summon Roth’s intertextual links to authors ranging from the anonymous writer of the medieval play Everyman, through Thoreau, Hawthorne, Crane, Ellison, Coover, and the New York intellectuals in the United States, to Swift, Chekhov, Svevo, Kafka, Schulz, Gombrowicz, Camus, and Klíma in Europe, and on to Coetzee in South Africa. The book does not deal with all the works in Roth’s canon, but it offers a selection of works representing the different stages of Roth’s development as a writer, from his much-discussed works in the 1970s Portnoy’s Complaint and The Professor of Desire, to his engagement with the literature of Central Europe in the 1970s and 1980s, to the great works of the 1990s Sabbath’s Theater and the American trilogy, on to the later works Everyman and Exit Ghost. In addition, the book also examines texts which seem to have received less critical attention, such as the political satire Our Gang, Roth’s conversation with Ivan Klíma published in Shop Talk, and the epilogue to Zuckerman Bound––The Prague Orgy––which is rarely studied for itself. The aim of this book is not to force Philip Roth into systematic alignment with other writers but rather to be sensitive to the ways in which he responds to his precursors and contemporaries. Philip Roth and World Literature: Transatlantic Perspectives and Uneasy Passages is the first book-length study to examine Philip Roth and his works in this context. Having adopted the transatlantic as a framework through which Roth’s body of work can be explored, the book expands the understanding of Roth’s connections with the literary canon from American literature to European and world literature. In this way, the book pushes the edges of the transatlantic further to highlight Roth’s sympathy for and resistance to powerful earlier and contemporary modes of writing on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. Each section of the book locates aspects of Roth’s fiction in an expanded literary space that unsettles assumptions of his so-called parochialism. The book illustrates some of the various comparative perspectives from which Roth’s work may be viewed. It brings into a dialogue a number of voices on both sides of the Atlantic with the aim to show that, like Roth’s fiction itself, literary scholarship on him is not self-enclosed and unitary. Of particular interest are the chapters by those outside of the United States who bring different interpretative frameworks into the existing traditionally North American scholarly criticism on Roth. By offering new readings of both well-studied and lesser-studied works, sometimes in unexpected company, the book discloses the critical difference that comparative scholarship can affect. The uneasy passages the book opens will not exhaust the numerous intersections between Roth and the work of other writers. The book’s contribution is to place Roth’s fiction firmly in a larger transnational context. Far from insular, Roth’s work appears as deeply rooted in the American canon while at the same time showing a remarkable openness, a persistent need for contact with his European forebears, and true engagement with contemporary world literature. The transnational perspective of the book makes it important for the rapidly growing field of transatlantic and transnational American studies. The book will be value to collections in American literature and Jewish studies, comparative literature and criticism, and transatlantic and transnational American studies.  

Resumen: En los cuentos de Juan Rulfo “No oyes ladrar los perros”, “Luvina” y “Diles que no me maten!” el tema de la muerte juega un papel importante. Es interesante estudiar como la idea de la muerte determina a los personajes y sus relaciones con los otros.

La présente étude traite des rapports des étudiants du Département de Langue et de Littérature françaises  (DLLF) de l’Université nationale d’Athènes-Capodistrienne avec la culture et la civilisation françaises. Dès leur inscription à l’université, les étudiants sont en contact avec les particularités de la culture de l’étudiant. Ensuite, durant leur parcours universitaire, ils apprennent la culture et la civilisation française essentiellement à travers les cours dispensés par la section de l’Histoire de la civilisation française du DLLF. Après avoir présenté les traits du comportement et de la manière de vivre des étudiants, nous examinons le profil des étudiants du DLLF. Ensuite nous présentons conformément aux théories des didacticiens les particularités de l’enseignement de la langue étrangère et nous abordons les notions de la culture et de la civilisation. De plus, nous présentons l’enseignement de la culture française aux DLLF localisés à l’étranger et à l’influence exercée par le développement des études culturelles s’attardant surtout sur ceux des pays anglosaxons. Finalement, nous étudions l’enseignement de l’histoire de la civilisation française au DLLF avec la présentation de l’ancien et du nouveau programme d’études qui a introduit de nouveaux cours de civilisation française.

Although loneliness as a distinct entity has been relatively neglected by psychoanalysts, it is in the domain of psychoanalysis that solitude, as a state of being alone, has long ago been described as a fundamental human experience and has been ascribed a plethora of meanings. In this chapter, various psychoanalytic views on the origins of this type of solitude and its developmental course during the first years of life are discussed and evaluated, organized around four dimensions: the fear of solitude and separation anxiety, the solitary self, the ability to be alone and the necessity of being alone, as well as the companionable nature of solitude. Next, a brief overview of existing research, some of which was conducted by psychoanalysts, revealing aspects of aloneness experience early in life, is presented. Finally, conclusions and future directions centre around the paradoxical nature of solitude from the beginning of life.

This paper analyses the experiences and potential for public procurement targeting innovation (PPfI) and pre-commercial public procurement (PCP) in Greece, which is a country with small internal market skewing actual activities towards light manufacturing, labour-intensive industries and small-firm organisation. This environment is not conducive to PPfI, as there is limited lobbying power and few visible impacts from it. Public procurement is in general organised in a traditional way, respecting the EU Directives but not acting as an industrial policy tool. It is, however, argued that even in such markets diffusion-oriented PPfI and unintentional PPfI can play a beneficial role and create potential benefits from export markets, when co-development of client and supplier is successful, in particular if this takes place early in the technology cycle to allow suppliers to acquire knowledge about specific business procedures and be able to demonstrate systems in operation.

One of the major challenges of public procurement for innovation (PPI) is risk aversion and the limited risk management practices in the public sector (Edler et al., Chapter 2 in this volume). While this problem has been identified for many years (Edler et al., 2005), there have been no attempts to design an effective risk management framework that can be used to alleviate it. The major reason for this is the high level of complexity when it comes to defining, understanding and operationalizing risk, which are necessary in order to make it manageable in the first place. Risks associated with PPI do not only emanate from the nature of the innovation activity itself, but have a large number of different origins associated with the heterogeneity of the actor landscape in PPI. Moreover, different actors have different risk perceptions, and we often find a mismatch between actor groups benefiting from an innovation (users, suppliers, citizens) and those that bear the consequences of its failure. Against this background, the purpose of this chapter is to conceptualize risk and risk management in PPI and discuss the value of such a conceptualization for PPI practice and policy-making. Our conceptualization of risk and risk management in PPI refers to the various types of risks that are relevant to the public procurement process, and indicates some governance and managerial challenges these pose for PPI.

The topic of this paper seems perhaps over-ambitious, touching as it does on several questions which have become serious theoretical issues over the last decades and some of them over several centuries. The controversy on the nature of grammatical categories has marked Philosophy and Linguistics throughout the twentieth century; the more modest controversy on aspect and its relationship to the disputed category Aktionsart, as well as its relationship to tense, has been dealt with in a vast amount of literature.This short paper cannot provide a definitive answer; it has the more modest aim of showing     a) that Greek aspect and Aktionsart form a continuum     b) that the two categories remain nevertheless distinctand thus hopefully contribute to the broader discussion on gradience, in particular intersective gradience, as defined by Aarts (2007).

Le présent article, qui a été publié en français, en anglais et en turc dans le cadre de l’exposition sur Smyrne est accompagné d’une riche illustration des œuvres d’art du XVIIIe  siècle. En nous appuyant sur des récits viatiques nous avons étudié l’image de l’Orient qu’ils décrivaient. Après avoir brièvement abordé l’héritage iconographique de l’Orient nous traitons de la thématique adoptée dans leurs œuvres d’art.  Plus précisément, nous examinons, la présence du paysage et l’évolution de sa représentation ainsi que  l’importance de l’intégration des habitants dans les compositions des voyageurs français. Ensuite, nous analysons les caractéristiques du « voyage archéologique » s’attardant sur ceux du comte de Caylus, des Fourmont et de Julien-David Leroy. Finalement nous étudions le « voyage pittoresque » dont le caractère polymorphe a rendu les différents aspects de l’Orient.

Flood damages for residential and commercial/industrial areas can be direct and indirect. While direct damages are caused by physical contact of floodwater, indirect flood damages are caused through interruption of economic and social activities as a consequence of direct flood damages. Direct and indirect damages can be subdivided into primary and secondary categories as primary are the physical damages on the property and secondary damages are defined by the replacement costs. In this paper we are trying to estimate direct residential flood damages in a section of Kifissos drainage basin (Athens, Greece), taken into account the physical characteristics of the system as well as the landuse and predominant building types of the study area. Taken into account the results of this model each element of the urban environment has to be properly prepared and build capacity to cope with the current and future challenges.

Πρόκειται για το επεξεργασμένο κείμενο ανακοίνωσης στο διεθνές συνέδριο «Heinrich von Kleist – Για τα 200 χρόνια από το θάνατό του», το οποίο διοργανώθηκε από το Τμήμα Γερμανικής Γλώσσας και Φιλολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών σε συνεργασία με το Εργαστήριο Μελέτης Ελληνογερμανικών Σχέσεων (Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών, Τμήμα Πολιτικής Επιστήμης και Δημόσιας Διοίκησης) και πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Αθήνα, στις 8, 9 και 10 Δεκεμβρίου 2011. Ως προς την επιλογή της θεματικής της, η τραγωδία Πενθεσίλεια (1808) του Χάινριχ φον Κλάιστ  (1777-1811) αποτελεί απόδειξη για τον προσανατολισμό του νέου συγγραφέα προς το αρχαίο δράμα και τον αρχαίο μύθο, κάτι καταρχήν απόλυτα σύμφωνο με τις επιταγές της εποχής. Ο Κλάιστ ανατρέχει σε ένα επεισόδιο από τον βίο και τις πράξεις του Αχιλλέα κατά τη διάρκεια της πολιορκίας της Τροίας, που αναφέρεται στη συνάντηση και μονομαχία του με την αμαζόνα Πενθεσίλεια, την οποία σκοτώνει. Στο κείμενό του ο Κλάιστ αντιστρέφει τους όρους, η Πενθεσίλεια είναι εκείνη που θα σκοτώσει τον Αχιλλέα, σε μια πράξη απελπισίας ως απόρροια της εσωτερικής της διαμάχης ανάμεσα στο νόμο των αμαζόνων και την επιθυμία της. Το δράμα δεν συνάδει διόλου με τις επιταγές του κλασικισμού της Βαϊμάρης σύμφωνα με τις οποίες η αρχαιότητα έχει αναχθεί σε ιδεώδες, σε πρότυπο αρμονίας και ανθρωπισμού και βασική κατηγορία του αισθητικού της προγράμματος. Ο Κλάιστ δεν εξωραΐζει την αφήγηση, αντίθετα παραθέτει σκηνές σκληρότητας και πάθους που απεικονίζουν τις εσωτερικές συγκρούσεις του νεωτερικού υποκειμένου, του υποκειμένου του Διαφωτισμού, που βιώνει ως μύθο την μέσω του ορθολογισμού χειραφέτησή του. Και ως προς τη μορφή ο Κλάιστ αποκλίνει από τα ειωθότα, παρουσιάζοντας μια τραγωδία διαρθρωμένη σε 24 σκηνές, σε συνεχή ροή, χωρίς κατανομή σε πράξεις, γεγονός που θεωρείται ότι παραπέμπει στις 24 ραψωδίες της Ιλιάδας. Δεν είναι το μόνο στοιχείο που διαφοροποιεί, ενδεχομένως, τον ειδολογικό χαρακτήρα του έργου. Η Πενθεσίλεια περιλαμβάνει εκτενείς αφηγήσεις, εφαρμόζοντας τεχνικές που ήδη το αρχαίο δράμα χρησιμοποιεί, οι οποίες, όπως και ο χορός, αποτελούν εν τέλει στοιχεία μάλλον επικού χαρακτήρα. Στην μελέτη αναδεικνύεται ο τρόπος προσέγγισης του Κλάιστ της μορφής του δράματος στο σύνολο έργο του, ενώ υποδεικνύεται και δοκιμάζεται ενδεικτικά η εφαρμογή στην ανάλυση της τραγωδίας Πενθεσίλεια ερμηνευτικών εργαλείων που προτείνει η σύγχρονη αφηγηματολογία, με στόχο αφενός τη συμβολή στον επίκαιρο διάλογο σχετικά με την αφηγηματική διάσταση του δράματος ως είδους και αφετέρου την ανάδειξη του ιδιότυπου «επικού» χαρακτήρα της Πενθεσίλειας, που αφηγείται την μήνιν της ηρωίδας.  

Ce travail ambitionne à travers l’étude du cas des missions assignées par l’État français aux professeures du secondaire entre 1914 et 1918 de privilégier une vision bisexuée de l’histoire de la Grande Guerre : ces « missions » universitaires qui revêtent deux formes (mobilisation des énergies dans l’effort de guerre et délégation de professeures dans les établissements secondaires masculins) ont contribué à décloisonner des espaces d’homosociabilité, à créer aussi une nouvelle dynamique au sein des identités sexuées. L’étude, fondée sur les textes autobiographiques de deux professeures du secondaire, Jeanne Glatron et Jeanne Galzy/Baraduc, tente, à l’intersection de l’individuel et du social, de lancer une réflexion sur un moment extra-ordinaire de la condition professorale féminine ; de proposer encore, par le recours à des sources plus traditionnelles de l’histoire mais tout autant indicatrices du basculement qui s’y est produit entre 1914 et 1918, un regard pluriel sur cette expérience de femmes en guerre. Ainsi, la première partie met en valeur le vécu, les expériences, la participation active à l’effort commun, le dévouement de ces deux enseignantes mobilisées la première en zone occupée et la seconde dans un lycée de garçons du Sud de la France. La deuxième traite d’un affrontement qui évolue parallèlement à l’affrontement militaire : il oppose les deux sexes sur un autre front, celui d’une classe de garçons. De ces témoignages de civiles dans la tourmente émerge la figure de la fonctionnaire fidèle certes au service de l’ordre établi, mais transfigurée, en même temps, par la nouvelle expérience en symbole de la fluidité des identités sexuées.

Waldenström's macroglobulinemia is a neoplastic disorder of the B lymphocytes that is characterized by the infiltration of the bone marrow by a lymphoplasmatic clone that produces a monoclonal immunoglobulin which is always of the IgM type. WM is named after Jan Waldenström, a Swedish physician who first described two patients who presented with oronasal bleeding, lymphadenopathy, anemia and thrombocytopenia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, high serum viscosity, normal bone radiographs, and bone marrow showing predominantly lymphoid cells. At that time electrophoresis of the serum proteins was not available; however, he attributed the hyperviscosity to an abnormal high-molecular-weight serum protein, which subsequently was shown to be a monoclonal immunoglobulin of the M class (IgM). Resumen: Aves sin nido y Los perros hambrientos son novelas representativas de la corriente indigenista de la literatura hispanoamericana de los siglos XIX y XX respectivamente. Ambas presentan el ambiente sociopolítico y los valores sociales de unas épocas concretas de la sociedad peruana. En Aves sin nido se presenta el ambiente social y la corrupción de los religiosos y de los representantes del poder. En Los perros hambrientos la sequía cambia el ambiente físico y determina el sistema de valores. El personaje del indígena, aunque víctima de su ambiente social, tiene altas cualidades humanas. Palabras claves: novela, hispanoamericana, indigenista, ambiente, valores Abstract: Aves sin nido and Los perros hambrientos are representative indigenous novels of Spanish American literature of the 19th and 20th centuries respectively. Both of them present the sociopolitical environment and the social values of particular times of the Peruvian society. In Aves sin nido, it is presented the corruption of the political and religious authorities. In Los perros hambrientos, the drought changes the setting and determines the value system. In this paper the author presents research into the role of religion in the modern world and into young people’s perspectives on the role of religion in European school systems attempting to justify compulsory Religious Education. International and European legislation, experiences of different countries and findings of researches in Greece published for the first time, provide a proposal for compulsory Religious Education which has to be based on the constructivist theory according to pedagogical practice in Europe.

The issue under contemplation is whether the Constitution is able to prevent – andin what ways – the creation of huge fiscal deficits in such a manner as to ensure theeconomic and social rights of the citizens. Although it has a particularly onerousimpact on the population, the issue of limitation of social rights due to financialcrunch and economic recession is not under contemplation here since it emerges at asubsequent time. In a certain sense it is less interesting from a legal perspectivebecause the limitations on social rights, particularly in view of their financial nature,are addressed through a set of provisions pertaining to legislative and judicial assessmentson the presence of grounds of public interest and of compliance with the principlesof equality, proportionality and the protection of human value.2To this end, the example used in this essay is the Greek Constitution. The viewssupported below are the following: First, the way that the Constitution has beeninterpreted to date is not consistent with fundamental rules and views of the EU andthe IMF, which is why there are delays in taking the measures that were agreed uponwith these international organizations and why there are shortcomings in theirimplementation. Second, the constitutional provisions regarding the economy,public finance and financial control do not suffice at a quality or a quantity level forthe prevention of crises, such as the one which the country currently faces.

The aim of this study is to discuss demythification and the subversion of myth inChrista Wolf’s Cassandra Project (1983) and Medea. Stimmen (1996). Wolfconsiders literature as an archaeological project, as a quest for the truth and the“blind spots” in personal and social history. On this quest she turns her attention toGreek mythology. A myth is not a context, but a frame. It is a supertemporal,multidimensional phenomenon, which allows a writer to move into free spaces.Thus, Wolf’s versions revise the myth in some fundamental points. Her mainconcern is to shed light on the manipulation of truth and the discrimination of thestranger. The author does not write, however, against the myth per se. On the onehand she points out the close connection between myth and politics and on theother hand she tries to explore the potential of myths in order to understand thepresent situation better and to look for livable alternatives or yet untried patterns.The reminiscence on the origins of the alienation offers a matrix for theexplanation of today’s conditions and at the same time permits a glimpse into thefuture: “the escape backwards as an escape forwards”.

In this chapter I investigate the prospects of integrated history and philosophy of science, by examining how philosophical issues raised by “hidden entities”, entities that are not accessible to unmediated observation, can enrich the historical investigation of their careers. Conversely, I suggest that the history of those entities has important lessons to teach to the philosophy of science. Hidden entities have played a crucial role in the development of the natural sciences. Despite their centrality to past scientific practice, however, several of them (e.g., phlogiston, caloric, and the ether) turned out to be fictitious. For this reason, they have figured prominently in recent debates on scientific realism. The issues I explore in this paper are entangled with those debates. I argue that our understanding of hidden entities and their role in experimental practice can be enhanced by adopting an integrated historical-cum-philosophical approach. On the one hand, philosophical reflection on the reality of those entities has a lot to gain by examining historically how they were ntroduced and investigated. On the other hand, the historical reconstruction of the careers of those entities may profit from philosophical reflection on their existence.

Abstract This article focuses on the chemistry of sugar radicals in the context of oxidative damage in nucleic acids. The seven sp3-hybridized CH bonds in 2-deoxyribose (six in ribose) are attacked by reactive oxygen species, generated either by the cell's internal oxygen cycle or by environmental insults, by chemical nucleases including enediyne antibiotics and reactive metal complexes, to generate sugar nucleosidyl radicals. For each position on the 2-deoxyribose or ribose moiety, the factors leading to the generation of the specific sugar radical, together with its fate under aerobic or anaerobic conditions in the nucleoside, nucleotide, single-stranded oligonucleotide, or double helix DNA, are discussed. Furthermore, the model systems that have been constructed for the photochemical-independent generation of each nucleosidyl radical or DNA lesion are described, together with the biochemical studies that have been performed in order to elucidate the stability, reparability, and mutagenic potential of each lesion. Other biologically important events involving modification of nearby nucleobases and the formation of DNA–DNA and DNA–protein cross-links are also discussed.

Dans le cadre de la pratique culturelle du Grand Tour, la présente étude traite de la perception des beaux-arts dans les récits viatiques de Charles Dupaty et d’Auguste Creuzé de Lesser. Dans les Lettres sur l’Italie (1785), qui se caractérisent par leur lyrisme, Dupaty exprime ses impressions personnelles et ses préférences esthétiques basées sur ses émotions. Rédigé dans un style différent, le Voyage en Italie et en Sicile fait en 1801 et 1802 (1806) de Creuzé de Lesser, qui procède à une évaluation de l’art italien, révèle également son esthétique. Exprimant leur perception personnelle de l’art, Dupaty et Creuzé de Lesser communiquent à leur lectorat leurs sentiments suscités par leur contact avec les œuvres artistiques. Les deux voyageurs, dont la critique des œuvres d’art se caractérise par l’originalité, traitent également des questions théoriques comme la décadence des arts en Italie. Plus précisément, Creuzé de Lesser, qui appréciait l’art français, a inclus, dans son récit viatique, le « Traité sur le beau et le joli » permettant ainsi à ses lecteurs de comprendre ses préférences esthétiques. De plus, il se réfère à la politique culturelle de Napoléon signalant l’enlèvement des œuvres d’art d’Italie. Notre article s’attarde également sur la place de l’art dans la structure narrative de leurs récits. Publiés à une vingtaine d’années d’intervalle, les deux récits viatiques sont révélateurs de la conquête de l’individualité du narrateur-voyageur et de la présence de la critique de l’art dans la littérature viatique.

The sixth chapter outlines the ongoing peace education programs, conflict resolution curricula and collaborative-intergenerational activities of non-profit organizations, training institutions, social movements and NGOs striving to eliminate racism and violence in schools and communities, including campaigns to rid sport of anti-Semitism and islamophobia as well as promote gender equity , such as (1) Athletes United for Peace, (2) Mercy Corps, (3) Peace First (formerly known as Peace Games), (4) Sport in Society (SIS), (5) Football 4 Peace (F4P), (6) Ultimate Peace (UP), (7) Teachers Without Borders, (TWB), (8) Bridges To Understanding, (9) Volunteer Action for Peace (VAP), (10) Women’s Initiative for Peace (WINPEACE) and (11) the Institute for International Sport and its 2011 World Peace Walks and World Scholar-Athlete Games which took place in the framework of the World Youth Peace Summit. In recent years, a wide variety of organizations have been using sport as an interventionist tool to nurture peacemaking across divided communities (F4P 2011). The expanding sport, development and peace sector (SDP) (Giulianotti 2010) while providing bridges to understanding also insists that sporting events and movements function to promote peace, tolerance and reconciliation among participants and viewers Bridging social inequality gaps through sport, namely reconciliation through sports, athlete activism, the promotion of new role models and mentors and intercultural synergies are vital, not only in view of the systematic misuse of Olympic values today –such as obsessive competitiveness that leads to violence, the gender leadership gap in sport governing bodies, the underrepresentation of migrants in mainstream sport institutions, doping, commercialization, the deathletization and modelification of male and female athletes in the mass media– but primarily in light of the impact of globalization on racism and xenophobia (Kamberidou 2011a). Accordingly this chapter presents arguments for the the institutionalization of peace education, as an integral part of the curricula in public schools beginning in pre-school or kindergarten.

Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM) is a distinct B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder that is characterized by infiltration of the bone marrow with lymphoplasmacytic cells and by an IgM monoclonal gammopathy. Both type I and type II cryoglobulins may be associated with WM. About 10-20% of patients with the diagnosis of WM have cryoglobulins, but clinically evident type I cryoglobulinemia occurs in less than 5% of WM patients. In type I cryoglobulinemia, the signs and symptoms are mainly related to the physicochemical properties of the monoclonal IgM and immune phenomena do not develop. In type II cryoglobulinemia, the symptoms are related to the immune phenomena, with vasculitis of small and medium-sized vessels as the most common finding. However, the clinical features of types I and II cryoglobulinemia may overlap. Plasmapheresis/plasma exchange is very effective for the immediate reduction of the amount of circulating type I cryoglobulins and immediate anti-lymphoma treatment with highly effective regimens should be considered concomitantly or following plasma exchange. In WM patients with type II cryoglobulinemia, plasmapheresis may not be as effective and immunosuppressive therapies should be considered, including rituximab. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Italia. Στόχος της μελέτης αυτής είναι, υπό το πρίσμα της σύγχρονης θεωρίας και έρευνας της αναπτυξιακής ψυχολογίας και της αναπτυξιακής ψυχοπαθολογίας, να εντοπίσει και να αναδείξει τα σημεία επαφής ανάμεσα στην αναδυόμενη ενηλικίωση και στις γνωσιακές συμπεριφοριστικές προσεγγίσεις, ή, με άλλα λόγια, να δείξει ότι η γνωσιακή συμπεριφοριστική θεραπεία είναι μια αναπτυξιακά κατάλληλη μέθοδος θεραπείας για την αναδυόμενη ενηλικίωση. Υπενθυμίζεται ότι κύριες αρχές της γνωσιακής συμπεριφοριστικής θεραπείας γενικά είναι ότι (α) η γνωστική δραστηριότητα επηρεάζει τη συμπεριφορά, (β) η γνωστική δραστηριότητα είναι δυνατόν να τροποποιηθεί και (γ) η επιθυμητή αλλαγή στη συμπεριφορά είναι δυνατόν να επιτευχθεί μέσω της γνωστικής αλλαγής (Dobson & Dozois, 2000). Έχει υποστηριχθεί (Reinecke, Dattilio, & Freeman, 1996) ότι η γνωσιακή συμπεριφοριστική θεραπεία ενέχει τέτοια δυναμική, που της επιτρέπει να προσαρμόζεται στις αναπτυξιακές απαιτήσεις κάθε περιόδου, ωστόσο δεν έχουν γίνει ακόμη αρκετές προσπάθειες προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση. Η μελέτη διαρθρώνεται σε δύο μέρη. Στο πρώτο μέρος, περιγράφονται η φύση και τα αναπτυξιακά χαρακτηριστικά της αναδυόμενης ενηλικίωσης και παρουσιάζονται, ενδεικτικά, ερευνητικά ευρήματα από πρόσφατη σχετική έρευνα στην Ελλάδα. Επίσης, γίνονται αναφορές στην ψυχική υγεία γενικά κατά την περίοδο αυτή και στην κατάθλιψη, ως παράδειγμα, ειδικά (με μια μικρή παρένθεση για το ρόλο της τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης στην περίοδο αυτή). Στο δεύτερο μέρος, αναλύονται με μεγαλύτερη αμεσότητα οι λόγοι για τους οποίους η γνωσιακή συμπεριφοριστική θεραπεία είναι σύστοιχη με τις αναπτυξιακές ανάγκες και τις κοινωνικές απαιτήσεις της αναδυόμενης ενηλικίωσης.

Το άρθρο αποτελεί την επεξεργασμένη και εμπλουτισμένη μορφή της ανακοίνωσης στο συνέδριο του Τμήματος Γερμανικής Γλώσσας και Φιλολογίας για τον Φρήντριχ Σίλλερ (2010) και θέμα του είναι η ενασχόληση του συγγραφέα με την ιστορία και την ιστορική επιστήμη, τόσο στο θεωρητικό του έργο, όσο και στα ιστορικά του δράματα. Ο Friedrich Schiller υπήρξε στον καιρό του αναγνωρισμένος ιστορικός, αλλά η έρευνα, φιλολογική και ιστορική, δεν ασχολήθηκε επί μακρόν με τη διάσταση αυτή του έργου του. Η αλλαγή επιστημονικού παραδείγματος στο χώρο της ιστοριογραφίας, που έστρεψε την προσοχή στον τρόπο που η ίδια η ιστοριογραφική αφήγηση συγκροτεί μέσω των αφηγηματικών δομών νόημα, αφύπνισε το ερευνητικό ενδιαφέρον για τον Σίλλερ ως ιστορικό και έδωσε ένα νέο πλαίσιο για την αναθεώρηση και τη διερεύνηση της αντίληψής του για τη ιστορία και την ιστοριογραφία. Το άρθρο συστηματοποιεί την πορεία του Σίλλερ ως ιστορικού, παρουσιάζει τις ιστορικές μελέτες του και την εξέλιξη της θεώρησής του για την ιστορία. Ο Σίλλερ επέλεξε ένα ιστορικό θέμα ήδη για το δεύτερο κατά σειρά συγγραφής έργο της δραματουργίας του, την «ρεπουμπλικανική τραγωδία» Η συνομωσία του Φιέσκο στη Γένοβα (1782). Η εκτενής ενασχόληση με την ιστορία ξεκινά πάντως κατά την έρευνα πηγών που διεξήγαγε λίγο αργότερα για τις ανάγκες της συγγραφής του Δον Κάρλος (1787), από την οποία προέκυψε το πρώτο μεγάλης έκτασης ιστοριογραφικό του σύγγραμμα με τίτλο Ιστορία της απόσχισης των Κάτω Χωρών από την ισπανική κυβέρνηση (1788). Ο Σίλλερ καλλιέργησε αρχικά μια ιστορική φιλοσοφική σκέψη βασισμένη στην αισιόδοξη προοπτική του Διαφωτισμού για την θετική πορεία της οικουμενικής ιστορίας και του ανθρώπου, αντίληψη που αναπτύσσεται στην εναρκτήρια διάλεξή του Τι σημαίνει και γιατί μελετά κανείς την οικουμενική ιστορία (26 Μαΐου 1789) στο πανεπιστήμιο της Ιένας, όπου εκλήθη να διδάξει ως ιστορικός. Η άποψη αυτή ανατρέπεται όμως μετά τη Γαλλική Επανάσταση και τα βίαια γεγονότα που ακολούθησαν. Στο εξής, ο στοχασμός πάνω στη σχέση του ανθρώπου με την ιστορία μετατοπίζεται, διέπεται από προβληματισμό και απαισιοδοξία, ενώ συνδέεται με το υψηλό, με την έννοια της μοίρας ως δύναμης που επιβάλλεται στον άνθρωπο. Η μεταβολή αυτή στην άποψη του Σίλλερ για την ιστορία ανιχνεύεται τόσο στα μεταγενέστερα ιστορικά και στα αισθητικά του κείμενα, όσο και στα κλασικά ιστορικά του δράματα. Ο τρόπος και τα μέσα της αναφοράς στην ιστορία αλλάζουν. Μετά το δεύτερο μεγάλο ιστορικό σύγγραμμά του, την Ιστορία του Τριακονταετούς Πολέμου (1792), ο Σίλλερ δεν γράφει πλέον ιστορικά συγγράμματα. Η ιστορία γίνεται πλέον θέμα της τραγωδίας. Τα ιστορικά δράματα της κλασικής περιόδου λειτουργούν ως μίμηση της ιστορίας και αποδεικνύονται για τον συγγραφέα το πλέον ενδεδειγμένο μέσο παρουσίασης και κατανόησης του απρόβλεπτου ιστορικού γίγνεσθαι.

Η εκπαίδευση αποτελεί προϊόν της νεωτερικότητας και οργανώνεται σε εκκοσμικευμένο περιβάλλον. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι η Θρησκευτική Εκπαίδευση αντιμετωπίζεται ως μάθημα του σχολικού προγράμματος, όπως τα υπόλοιπα, και όχι ως μύηση σε μία θρησκεία. Στην Ελλάδα το μάθημα των Θρησκευτικών είναι ένα ακόμη μάθημα του Προγράμματος Σπουδών και δεν έχει ομολογιακό χαρακτήρα με βάση τα δύο τελευταία προγράμματα (2003, 2011). Υιοθετώντας μάλιστα παιδαγωγικά τον κονστρουκτιβισμό, σήμερα, χρησιμοποιεί περισσότερο τις τεχνικές του Θεάτρου στην Εκπαίδευση, αφού και οι δύο βασίζονται στην εμπειρία, καλλιεργούν δεξιότητες και στάσεις αποδομώντας την παγιωμένη γνώση και ζητώντας την ελεύθερη άποψη. Φυσικά αυτή η θρησκευτική εκπαίδευση επιδιώκει να αναπτύξει την κριτική στάση και την ερμηνεία της πραγματικότητας των θρησκειών και των πολιτισμών, που παράγουν, στοχεύοντας στην ειρηνική συνύπαρξη και την αλληλεγγύη. Η εισήγηση αυτή εξετάζει γιατί το θέατρο διευκολύνει τη διάδραση μεταξύ μαθητών και θρησκευτικής γνώσης στο σχολείο, με αναφορά σε εφαρμογές στην τάξη, οι οποίες στηρίζονται στην εμπειρία των Heathcote και Somers.

The Amvrakia spring is located at the bottom of Meteora pillars and more specifically near the village of Kastraki (Kalambaka municipality). It is a seasonal spring since it functions only during the wet period. The Meteora conglomerates which dominate the area are characterized by large discontinuities creating a network of groundwater pathways above the impermeable strata of the underlying marls. The research targets was to define these water pathways in order to understand the mechanism of Amvrakia spring, by mapping the exposed discontinuity network and define their underground extension with the contribution of geophysical techniques. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Very Low Frequency (VLF) methodologies were applied. The VLF method is indicated for the detection of water-bearing fracture zones, but before the application of their filters they had to be processed for topographic corrections, as the area had not smooth relief. Five (5) VLF profiles were conducted with different directions around the spring’s area, in order to detect possible conductive zones in the conglomerates surrounding the study area. Moreover, two (2) ERT sections of a total length of 140m were carried out, parallel to existent VLF sections, for crosschecking the geophysical information. Both techniques revealed important conductive zones (<200 Ohm.m) from the south-eastern Meteora conglomerate pillars, possibly interpreted as discontinuities filled with water feeding the spring.

Case matching effects involve situations where a nominal element appears in a case that is not predicted by its syntactic status in its clause, but rather matches the case requirements of an external element. Such constructions pose serious problems for syntactic accounts of case in terms of a syntactic Case feature, because they involve a situation of case conflict/mismatch. In this article, I address the issue of case assignment/realization by examining case attraction phenomena in Greek free relative clauses. In particular, I suggest an analysis that builds on the idea that case categories are not primitives, but rather they can be decomposed in bundles of features and I propose a division of labour between narrow syntax and Morphological Structure as far as case assignment/realization is concerned. Case assignment takes place in narrow syntax as a licensing device (abstract case), but it refers only to those features that are relevant to the distinction between structural and inherent case. The full specification of the case feature bundle takes place in the Morphological Structure as a result of the application of specific case assignment algorithms defined in terms of case domains and hierarchies. At a theoretical level, such a hypothesis has the benefit of incorporating the insights about the role of case determination at Morphological Structure, as well as maintaining the well-established notion of abstract case as a licensing device of narrow syntax.

In this paper we propose a feature-based analysis of Cappadocian Greek nominal inflection. In particular, based on the formal description of Standard Greek nominal inflection by Ralli (2000), we identify the inflectional formatives and analyse them as bundles of features expressing number, case, animacy and inflectional class. The feature specification of each ending determines its distribution in the relevant variety. Similarly, inflectional classes are defined on the basis of (a) the compatibility of a given noun with an inflectional pattern and (b) the base alternations it exhibits. Such an approach has the advantage of accounting for the variation in base formation and for the agglutinative inflectional patterns by means of systematic base allomorphy and default formatives.

Cette contribution au volume consacré à l’identité féminine dans l’oeuvre d’Elsa Triolet tente de décrypter la pensée « féministe » de l’auteure à travers ses écrits personnels et autobiographiques, ses articles et reportages, les discours également prononcés dans le cadre des manifestations organisées par l’Union des Femmes Françaises. Dans une première partie sont examinées ses conceptions sur les rapports des sexes. Triolet réfute haut et fort la supériorité des hommes sur les femmes et condamne la ségrégation des sexes. Selon l’auteure l’être humain n’est pas fait que de « féminin » ou que de « masculin ». La société devrait être donc construite à l’image de cet être mixte : elle prône alors un univers bisexué, un langage aussi dans lequel les deux sexes seraient visibles. Pour y arriver, elle invite à un « féminisme individuel », un féminisme quotidien. C’est qu’elle rejette l’idée de la mobilisation collective des femmes : à son sens, cette forme de lutte représente une autre manifestation du « ghetto » qu’elle abhorre. Fidèle à ces convictions, elle choisit de promouvoir des causes qui s’inscrivent dans le cadre plus large de l’action des intellectuelles de gauche proches du PCF. Dans la deuxième partie, il est question de son engagement dans la Résistance. Au cours de cette période de sa vie, Triolet se soumet en apparence à la répartition sexuée des rôles. Le « je » féminin recouvre ses droits dans ses seuls écrits portant sur cette période : moment transitionnel, la guerre bouleverse les équilibres et les assignations, brouille les identités. Ces textes participent ainsi à la construction d’une mémoire communiste de la Résistance au féminin. La troisième partie est consacrée au combat de Triolet, compagnon de route du PCF, contre l’invasion d’une culture américaine en France. En pleine guerre froide, l’auteure ne dissocie pas la lutte en faveur d’une littérature « progressiste » de celle pour la paix : les femmes pourraient contribuer à la propagation de cette culture, seule arme contre la guerre. Fidèle à la ligne du Parti, elle ne cesse de valoriser - quand l’Union des Femmes Françaises fait appel à elle – cet aspect du rôle social féminin. Pour expliquer la propension des hommes à la guerre, elle a recours au schéma nature/culture : elle considère que seule la paix est conforme à la nature des deux sexes, le bellicisme étant ainsi présenté comme une construction sociale ; or, la nature masculine n’est pas perméable au conditionnement social, d’où la supériorité naturelle des femmes dont la présence dans la sphère publique constitue, de ce fait, une condition indispensable au progrès humain.L’errance à travers les textes d’Elsa Triolet conduit donc à la constatation que sa pensée « féministe » se forme sous le signe de la contradiction due aussi à son appartenance politique : adhésion à un féminisme de l’égalité dans son discours introspectif mais, dans la sphère publique, promotion du différentialisme sexuel ; lutte individuelle pour l’égalité avec les hommes et, parallèlement, rejet d’une action féministe collective au nom d’une société mixte et égalitaire.

The assessment of an aquifers’ vulnerability to pollution is of great importance, and can be used as a tool to augment planning, effective protection and management of groundwater resources’ quality, especially in the case of karstic aquifers. The present study aims to assess the intrinsic vulnerability of a karstic groundwater system, with the use of a modified version of the PI method. The assessments are functional to the effectiveness of the protective cover, as well as to the degree to which the protective cover is bypassed due to flow conditions. The used data was obtained by field work, empirical and semi-quantitative approaches regarding lithology, fissuring and karstification of bedrock, soil characteristics, hydrology, hydrogeology, topography and vegetation. The combinational effect of the above parameters, as processed with the aid of a GIS system, yielded the final calculation of the protection factor (π) and subsequently the vulnerability of the aquifer to pollution.

The identification of a monoclonal protein in serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) is a common event requiring medical consultation. A monoclonal protein may be the hallmark of a malignant disease, such as multiple myeloma or Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia (and less often of other lymphoproliferative disorders), of diseases associated with a malignant plasma cell clone, such as AL amyloidosis or other plasma cell related disorders, or, quite commonly may have no direct impact and belong to monoclonal gammopathies of undetermined significance (MGUS). Jan Waldenstrom introduced the term “essential hyperglobulinemia” in order to describe patients who had a small serum protein electrophoretic spike but no evidence of overt multiple myeloma (MM), Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM), primary amyloidosis (AL), or related disorders. The seminal work by Kyle indicated that some patients with this monoclonal gammopathy develop MM, or WM or AL or other lymphoproliferative malignancies, and introduced the term “monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance” (MGUS)[1]. Kyle also described patients with histologic and biochemical features of myeloma (bone marrow clonal plasma cells (BMPC) involvement of 10% or higher, presence of a serum M-protein value higher than 3 g/dl) that did not have lytic bone lesions, anemia, renal impairment or other clinical manifestations of myeloma who remained stable, with no need for chemotherapy, for several years[2]. Alexanian also presented data on “indolent myeloma”[3], that included patients who had no clinical features of overt myeloma such as anemia and renal dysfunction and had fewer than three lytic bone lesions. Among these patients, median time to initiation of chemotherapy was two years, but some patients remained stable for several years. Thus, the term “smoldering” MM or “asymptomatic” or “indolent” MM, entered the clinical practice. The definitions, however, were not strict among different groups. In 2003 a consensus paper defined MGUS and asymptomatic or smoldering myeloma (Table 10.1). MGUS requires that M-protein in serum is <30 g/l and that bone marrow clonal plasma cells are <10% with no evidence of other B cell proliferative disorders and no end organ damage (anemia, renal impairment, hypercalcemia, lytic bone lesions). © Cambridge University Press 2014.

In the last decades accelerated and unrestrained structural and institutional changes—on an institutional level— have been shattering significant cultural spheres such as class, gender, nationality, nation, and so forth. Today, due to social transformations individual/personal identities are changing and undermining, our sense of self as complete subjects. Namely, the social subject is losing his/her autonomy and self-sufficiency. Identity is no longer formulated on the basis of the social subject’s inner nucleus but is constructed in the interrelations of the self with the social values, meanings and symbols (culture) of the world in which we live and act in [Hall, Held, McGrew 1992]. Social identity is no longer focused on the self as the centre but on the social-cultural environment and as a result identities are being transformed due to structural and institutional changes.  The postmodern social subject, in this framework and as a rule, cannot have a stable, static or permanent identity. The social subject— athlete, individual as well as diverse social groups— is confronted with different representations according to socio-cultural conditions.  Olympic sports, as a relatively autonomous socio-cultural system, exercise a dynamic influence on the social subject— who acts and communicates within its structures— in the construction of personal/individual identities as well as collective identities. For example, since 1981 the changes that came about with the official recognition of the commercialization of Olympic activity, for some meant deviance and for others adaptation to transforming-evolving social processes.  Significant here are the changes regarding Olympic social reality— the material and structural conditions that influence the formation of identity— which affect the active participants as well as the passive ones. In our postmodern period, identities are continuously formed, transformed and reconstructed in relation to the ways that we are represented or addressed in the cultural system that surrounds us (Donnelly, Young 1988).   Keywords: globalization, cosmopolitanism, ecumenical values, collective identity, diverse identities, sport identity.

Primary systemic immunoglobulin light chain amyloidosis (AL) results from the accumulation of amyloid fibrils that are composed of a monoclonal immunoglobulin light chain that is produced by a plasma cell clone. Almost every organ can be involved, resulting in multisystemic symptoms and signs. Diagnosis may be difficult and requires a certain degree of suspicion. Treatment is challenging and most patients may be quite frail. Careful assessment of the organ involvement and prognosis is needed before planning the treatment strategy. Supportive care is critical for AL patients. The goal of treatment is the reduction of light chain production. Conventional chemotherapy may be effective and recently introduced novel agents expand treatment options in patients who relapse or are not candidates for high-dose melphalan with autologous stem cell transplant (HDM-ASCT). In experienced centers, HDM-ASCT in patients deemed capable of tolerating the procedure is associated with high response rates with modest treatment-related mortality. © 2011 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Paros Island is part of the complex of Cyclades Islands, situated in the central Aegean Sea, Greece. The climate of Paros Island is representative of the Mediterranean type, with abrupt rainfalls and lower temperatures during winters and long term sunshine accompanied by dry periods during the summer, conditions able to cause severe problems on the land. The island's low vegetation leaves the ground exposed to erosion. Also, the recent change from the local's people agricultural activities to touristic ones-especially the abandonment of the agricultural terraces during the last 50 years-has influenced the soil cover of the island in an unfavorable way, leading to total soil loss and exposure of the bedrock in many areas. Aggravating this fact, the island's steep slopes render soil regeneration almost impossible. The transferred soil is either moving towards the small alluvial plains or, in most cases, is being deposited directly to the sea. In the following paper an effort is being made to depict the currently existing situation on the island by delineating the areas still appearing to be at a high risk for erosion and to estimate the average amount of soil loss. For the later, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was tested on the data of the island. The application of the USLE was implemented via MapInfo and ArcGIS Tools Software. The main result of the present study is that it outlines the areas where severe erosion might occur and also gives a good example for land users what is the best scenario o protect their land against erosion and which plant they should use or avoid to protect their soil from erosion.

This paper explores the role of meso- and macro-context in the interpretation of text, on the basis of our research on the text of Greek laws. The use of the grammatical categories of tense, aspect and modality in these texts deviates from everyday use (Panaretou 2005, Moser and Panaretou 2009).The study is based on a comparison of native speakers’ judgements (elicited through questionnaires and interviews and subjected to qualitative analysis) on law texts and everyday contexts containing the performance of the same type of speech act as the law: a mother setting a rule for her children and delineating the consequences of breaking this rule. Uses judged unanimously as ungram- matical and unacceptable in the latter context went unnoticed in law texts.Our conclusion is that what licenses deviant uses is not the type of speech act, but the genre of law texts; it is argued that, as a form of meso-context, the genre of law texts, by virtue of being highly institutionalized within the cognitive and socio-cultural context in which it is embedded (Fetzer 2004, 2007), creates a cognitive frame so powerful as to impose specific interpretations even to grammatical forms which would be unacceptable in different (con)texts. 

In this essay, we study the relationship between psychoanalysis and education, a relationship that is as old as the history of psychoanalysis itself. Freud’s views on this issue, which appear scattered in his various writings, are identified and synthesized. More specifically, we discuss Freud’s views on the importance of applying psychoanalysis in education, the significance of the educator’s personality, his/her difficulties in understanding children, the “prophylactic” (preventive) role of education, the necessity to adopt an optimum stance between the two poles of permissiveness and frustration, the links of education with sublimation and culture, the limits of education as compared to the individual’s development, etc. These views are discussed in relation to Anna Freud’s systematic elaboration on the relationship between psychoanalysis and education, as well as to various views of contemporary psychoanalysts on the same issue.

In this theoretical paper, we search and integrate historical information about Sigmund Freud’s, the founder of psychoanalysis, attendance of the classic Gymnasium in Vienna (1865‐1873). Drawing from Freud’s essay “Some reflections on schoolboy psychology” (1914), which he wrote for the fiftieth anniversary of his school, some of his letters, his biographer Ernest Jones, as well as the testimony of one of his sisters and the son of one of his classmates, we attempt to reconstruct Freud’s attendance in the Gymnasium. We also attempt a historical interpretation of psychoanalysis, according to which Freud’s years in the classic Gymnasium – mainly his relationships with his masters – are associated with the Oedipus complex, ambivalence, and of course the educational philosophy of that time.

Παρουσιάζεται με αδρές γραμμές η ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρουσα περίπτωση της πρόσληψης του ποιητή Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) στην Ελλάδα, που ξεκινά τον 19ο αιώνα και συνεχίζεται με διακυμάνσεις ως τις μέρες μας. Στο άρθρο δίνεται πάντως έμφαση στην παρουσίαση του ποιητή και των ιδιοτήτων του έργου του, που τον καθιστούν αντιπροσωπευτικό συγγραφέα της αρχόμενης νεωτερικότητας, με την έννοια της μετάβασης από τον κλασικορομαντικό ποιητή μιας αισθητικής-ηθικής κοσμοθέασης στον μοντέρνο συγγραφέα και διανοούμενο μιας νεότερης εποχής, ο οποίος παρακολουθεί και σχολιάζει στο έργο του, θεωρητικό και λογοτεχνικό, την ρέουσα πραγματικότητα. Σημαντική θέση στο έργο του Χάινε έχουν οι αναφορές σε μορφές της ελληνικής μυθολογίας και αρχαιότητας που διατρέχουν το σύνολο του έργου του και συνθέτουν την ιδιότυπη προσωπική μυθολογία του ποιητή, η οποία κινείται στο μεταίχμιο ανάμεσα στην ελεγειακή αναπόληση μιας χαμένης αισθησιακής χαράς της ζωής και στην σπινθηροβόλα ειρωνική διάθεση του σχολιασμού της επικαιρότητας με το ένδυμα του μύθου. Προκύπτει το ερώτημα του τρόπου πρόσληψης στην Ελλάδα τόσο αυτής της διάστασης του έργου του Χάινε, όσο και των ιδιαίτερων υφολογικών και ρητορικών δομών των κειμένων του, ερώτημα, το οποίο αντιμετωπίζεται διεξοδικά στη μονογραφία της γράφουσας.

his paper investigates identity representations through a narrative perspective. It examines the reproduction of social stereotypes through the creation of machinima films created by the students of the Department of French language at the University of Athens. According to Giddens΄s project of social and self identity and Ricoeur’s interpretation theories, the machinima films will be considered as an eloquent reflection of their creators’ representations. They claim that narrative is the dialectical process, between me and the other, through which the person is constantly led to a conscious identity adjustment. Based on this assumption, we investigate the mediating role of machinima, animated filmmaking within a real-time virtual 3-D environment, in the identity awareness of the subject. We study the representations produced by a group of students through the evaluation of the signifying practice of the creation of machinima films they have created during a Cyberculture course

Outflows emanating from the environment of stellar or galactic objects are a widespread phenomenon in astrophysics. Their morphology ranges from nearly spherically symmetric winds to highly collimated jets. In some cases, e.g., in jets associated with young stellar objects, the bulk outflow speeds are nonrelativistic, while in others, e.g., in jets associated with active galactic nuclei or gamma-ray bursts, it can even be highly relativistic. The main driving mechanism of collimated outflows is likely related to magnetic fields. These fields are able to tap the rotational energy of the compact object or disk, accelerate, and collimate matter ejecta. To zeroth order these outflows can be described by the highly intractable theory of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Even in systems where the assumptions of zero resistivity (ideal MHD), steady state, axisymmetry, one fluid description, and polytropic equation of state are applicable, the problem remains difficult. In this case the problem reduces to only two equations, corresponding to the two components of the momentum equation along the flow and in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field (transfield direction). The latter equation is the most difficult to solve, but also the most important. It answers the question on the degree of the collimation, but also crucially affects the solution of the first, the acceleration efficiency and the bulk velocity of the flow. The first and second parts of this chapter refer to nonrelativistic and relativistic flows, respectively. These Parts can be read independently. In each one, the governing equations are presented and discussed, focusing on the case of flows that are magnetically dominated near the central source. The general characteristics of the solutions in relation to the acceleration and collimation mechanisms are analyzed. As specific examples of exact solutions of the full system of the MHD equations that satisfy all the analyzed general characteristics, self-similar models are presented.

This chapter investigates the profitability of technical trading rules in the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), utilizing the FTSE/ASE 20 index during the period 1995 to 2008. We focus on a less developed and efficient stock market, given the existing scarcity of research in such markets. The technical rules that will be explored are simple moving averages. We compare technical trading strategies in the spirit of Brock, Lakonishok, and LeBaron (1992), employing traditional t test and bootstrap methodology under the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model. The results provide strong evidence on the profitability of the technical trading rules against the “buy and hold” strategy and contradict the efficient market hypothesis.

Current approaches to syntactic derivation capitalize on the notion of syntactic cycles either in the sense of phases (Chomsky 2000) or derivational cascades (Uriagereka 1999). Such models raise some interesting issues regarding the way in which phonology processes the syntactic output. In this paper we propose that the derivational status of syntactic material is reflected on the way PF organizes the output of syntax into phonological phrases. More specifically, based on evidence from the prosodification of clitic-doubled DP-objects in Greek, we argue that elements which exhibit derivational islandhood form independent phonological phrases and, significantly, are impervious to PF restructuring mechanisms. We further explore the limits of this isomorphism by investigating the derivational and prosodic status of preverbal Greek subjects and conclude that their syntactic non-islandhood is matched by an analogous behavior at the PF since they are subject to restructuring. This particular type of isomorphism provides empirical justification for drawing a distinction between two different implementations of Spell-Out, as originally proposed in Uriagereka (1999).

Santorini is an island of the Aegean Sea that belongs to the Prefecture of Cyclades. It is located southern of Ios Island and, along with Anafi, these are the southernmost islands of the Cyclades. Santorini is composed of Thera, with a crescent shape, and the islands of Therassia and Aspro (Aspronisi) in a circle. In the centre of the circle lies the caldera, which was formed by a volcanic eruption (or eruptions) and the simultaneous collapse of a part of the island. Santorini caldera is one biggest of the world, covering an area of approx. 83 km2, with a length of 11 km (N–S) and a width of 7.5 km (E–W). The volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palaia Kameni have formed within the caldera. Nowadays Santorini is a volcanic island that belongs to the Aegean volcanic arc and, with its fumaroles, gases and a high temperature, is the only active volcano in the Eastern Mediterranean.

This chapter examines overreaction hypothesis in four emerging Balkan stock markets (Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Turkey), using average returns of four developed markets (US, UK, Germany and Greece), during the period 2000-2007. The hypothesis tested is that developed market movements create overreaction to Balkan ones. We apply the Dimson’s (1979) aggregated coefficients method upon the conventional market model and an asymmetric non-linear smooth-transition generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ANST –GARCH) model. The findings provide evidence on accepting the overreaction hypothesis in Balkan markets and on excess volatility with asymmetric mean reversion patterns. The findings also support that a “momentum” portfolio strategy is the most appropriate for exceptional returns in emerging Balkan markets.

The Cycladic islands are located in the central Aegean Sea (Greece) forming a partly submerged plateau separated into two parts: the eastern shallower one (Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Syros, Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros) which formed one big island (6.978 km2) at the end of the last glacial period; the western islands (Kea, Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, Milos) which remained separated during the same period. The eastern islands constitute an erosional plateau which is the end product of a Neogene palaeosurface that was partially submerged due to thinning of the crust during the Quaternary. The presence of numerous Neolithic sites both on land and submerged indicates the existence of an advanced civilization in the area for thousands of years. The location of the lost Atlantis could be found in this area probably between Naxos, Paros and Antiparos.

The present contribution deals with the natural environment of Paros island coastal zone. More than 75% of the coastal zone consists of high and lower cliffs, whilst the relatively flat coastal plains are rare. The island receives a substantial amount of wave energy flux. The largest rocky and of high slopes coastal part is situated at the northeast and northwest part of the island being developed on hard (resistant to weathering processes) metamorphic rocks. Coastal plains (slopes < 2.5%) have been formed on Quaternary clastic formations. Furthermore, sandy and/or pebbly beach zones have been formed by the deposition of terrigenous (mainly) and marine sediments, along relatively sheltered from the wave activity parts of the coastline, i.e. the bays of Drios, Kephalos, Plastiras, Piso Livadi and Alikes. Palaeogeographic reconstruction with respect to sea-level rise within Holocene reveals that Paros island, at 10.000 yr BP, was much larger (some 1.025 km2) combined with the islands of Antiparos, Naxos and several islets, while at 6.000 yr BP was only connected to Antiparos island covering 264.3 km2. Finally, the predicted ca. 0.5 m of sea level rise for the year 2100, due to climatic change, will definitely threaten the socio-economy of the island as all touristic beaches will be deteriorated as well as several  onstructions along its coastline.

Cette étude fut élaborée dans le cadre d’une bourse de recherche du gouvernement canadien (Canadian Studies Faculty Enrichment Award) et s’appuie sur un matériel récolté dans divers centres de recherche (Bibliothèque nationale du Québec à Montréal, Bibliothèque des sciences humaines et sociales de l’université Laval, Centre de documentation de la Centrale de l’enseignement du Québec) et organismes québécois (Centre de documentation et Coordination à la condition féminine au ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport). La recherche ambitionne de combler un vide historiographique : au Québec, une des régions les plus progressistes de la francophonie en matière d’égalité des sexes et de parité, le champ d’investigation des représentations des sexes et du genre dans les manuels scolaires du secondaire est encore inexploré.L’étude porte plus précisément sur les manuels d’histoire des deux dernières classes de l’enseignement secondaire en usage entre 1980 et 2004. Pourquoi des manuels du second cycle du secondaire ? Dépourvus des stéréotypes trop voyants rencontrés parfois dans les manuels de l’école primaire, ils se prêtent plus facilement à l’analyse. Pourquoi des manuels si récents ? Compte tenu de la mission civique dont ils sont investis, l’examen de ces ouvrages permet d’interroger un avenir en train de s’inventer. La démarche méthodologique adoptée est à la fois quantitative et qualitative : constituer un corpus de notations sexuées afin d’examiner la place de chaque sexe dans l’histoire scolaire québécoise ; comparative également : il s’agit de mettre en évidence tant les évolutions advenues au cours de vingt-cinq ans que les lignes de force communes et les disparités entre manuels.Deux axes se profilent : l’examen des sources imprimées (programmes d’études, manuels) qui révèle un certain progrès de la place accordée au sexe féminin dans l’espace historique ; la proposition d’une relecture de deux périodes historiques fondée sur les apports des spécialistes de l’histoire des femmes et du genre, afin de repérer les vides laissés dans le récit historique : il s’agit des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles (étude de l’histoire de la colonie française de la Nouvelle-France) d’une part, de la période de l’entre-deux-guerres (étude de l’histoire de France), d’autre part. L’étude des chapitres correspondants des manuels québécois révèle que l’action des individus est largement mesurée à l’aune des structures du pouvoir interprétées au masculin ; les femmes, n’étant pas toujours concernées par cet aspect de l’histoire, restent souvent invisibles.

The highest deformation rate along the Africa/Eurasia convergence zone is welldocumented in the Aegean area, being >4 cm/yr. However, it is still under question whethercontinental deformation is distributed along major faults which extend through the wholelithosphere or over large areas. Furthermore, our knowledge concerning the implication oflithosphere-asthenosphere coupling in lithospheric plates driving forces is poor. Thesequestions can not easily be answered as most of the available information is mainly located ator close to the surface (geodesy, tectonics, seismicity). The high rates and type of surfacecontinental deformation within the Aegean constitute this region particularly interesting in thisperspective.This work is towards contributing to the better knowledge of the physical properties ofthe Aegean lithosphere by introducing experimental elastic and anelastic parameters inferredfrom long period Rayleigh wave. For this scope path-average phase velocities and attenuationcoefficients of fundamental Rayleigh wave crossing the Aegean were extracted over theperiod range 10-100 s. The wavetrains were recorded at the temporary broadband stationsinstalled some years ago in the Aegean region within the framework of a large scaleexperiment (SEISFAULTGREECE project).

This chapter describes the study of the structural control of the Meganissi island coastal zone and its geomorphological evolution; based on these, it presents a coastal hazard risk map. The coastal geomorphology is affected by the lithological configuration, the tectonism, the wider seismotectonic status and the sea activity. For this study, a database has been created in GIS. using all data deriving from the above characteristics as well as from detailed fieldwork, aerial photos, satellite images and pre-existing maps. Data were analysed and processed in order to understand the geomorphological evolution of this island and its close connection with the structural evolution. Finally, we proceeded to develop a coastal hazard risk map using the slope gradient, the wave energy and the structural characteristics of this island as input variables. This has been achieved via a fuzzy inferences model using a loosen coupling between the Mat lab software package and the MapInfo GIS.

This chapter studies the counteractive dynamic marine and river environments responsible for a river mouth’s and a delta’s modulation. The Acheloos River (West Greece) was chosen as the case study due to the recent changes taken place in its Delta area; the geotechnical constructions and the agricultural planning have altered the basin’s conditions. The aim of this study is to analyze the present dominant environment and the impact of human activity on this balance with the application of modern technological tools; emphasis is placed on the geomorphological along with the land use changes taking place in the three district parts of the Acheloos’ delta within a period of four decades (1960–2000): delta plain, delta front, pro delta. Bibliographic references, geographical and geological maps, aerial and satellite imagery of different seasons and dates, were utilized in addition to extensive fieldwork measurements and mapping. A geographic database was developed and it is continuously updated.

In this paper, we challenge the left-dislocation analysis of preverbal subjects in Greek on the basis of interpretative, syntactic and prosodic evidence. We propose that the derivation of subjects in Greek involves a movement operation which targets an EPP Spec,TP position. This movement operation creates a sequence of copies, the pronunciation and interpretation of which hinges on certain PF and LF requirements. Crucially, the linearization of this sequence of copies on the basis of independently existent PF principles derives the surface distribution of Greek subjects and accounts for its possible patterns of variation.

Weathering formations resembling small caves, known by the name of Tafoni, are a characteristic, but not exclusive, feature of the Mediterranean area. Examples of such geomorphological formations have been recorded in Sardinia and Corsica (Klaer, 1956; Frenzel, 1965), in Tuscany (Martini, 1978), in S. Spain (Mellor et al., 1997) and in the Aegean Sea area (Greece) (Riedl, 1991; Hejl, 2005).

Το άρθρο αποτελεί την επεξεργασμένη και εμπλουτισμένη μορφή της ανακοίνωσης στο συνέδριο του Τμήματος Γερμανικής Γλώσσας και Φιλολογίας του ΕΚΠΑ για τον Georg Trakl (2007). Διερευνά την πρόσληψη στην Ελλάδα, του γερμανικού εξπρεσιονισμού γενικότερα, και του Trakl ειδικότερα, μέσω μεταφράσεων, δοκιμίων και ποιητικών εκλεκτικών συγγενειών. Αναφέρεται αρχικά στην ποιητική σχέση του Νίκου Εγγονόπουλου με τον αυστριακό ποιητή, τον οποίο ο υπερρεαλιστής ποιητής και ζωγράφος συγκαταλέγει ανάμεσα στους πνευματικούς δημιουργούς που απασχόλησαν τη σκέψη, τη γραφίδα, αλλά και τον χρωστήρα του. Ο Georg Trakl απεικονίζεται σε πίνακα του Εγγονόπουλου του 1968, πίνακας που αναπαράγεται, μεταξύ άλλων πινάκων και ενός σχεδίου, στην έκδοση της ποιητικής συλλογής Στην κοιλάδα με τους ροδώνες του 1978, όπου συμπεριλαμβάνεται το ποίημα με τίτλο Το ποίημα του Γκέοργκ Τρακλ, εις Ριχάρδον Καρικιόπουλον. Η κοινή συνιστώσα των ποιημάτων και των έργων της συλλογής είναι ο διαρκής αναστοχασμός της ποιητικής συνείδησης πάνω στις αισθητικές καταβολές, οφειλές και δεσμεύσεις της, τμήμα των οποίων αποτελεί το έργο του Trakl.  Ύστερα από μια σύντομη αναδρομή στην εργοβιογραφία του Trakl και στη σταδιακή πορεία του από τις ρομαντικές-ιμπρεσσιονιστικές καταβολές του στον τρόπο έκφρασης που θα ονομασθεί αργότερα εξπρεσιονισμός, γίνεται εκτενέστερη αναφορά στην εξπρεσιονιστική τέχνη και λογοτεχνία και στα επί μέρους χαρακτηριστικά της, που εντοπίζονται στην ποίηση του Trakl: έκρηξη του χρώματος, το οποίο λειτουργεί ως αυτόνομη μεταφορά, παράταξη μορφολογικών και υφολογικών στοιχείων, ενορατικό και υποκειμενικό βλέμμα πάνω στην πραγματικότητα. Στη συνέχεια εξετάζεται εν συντομία η έκταση της παρουσίας του γερμανικού εξπρεσιονισμού στην Ελλάδα και η περιορισμένη σχέση του με τον ελληνικό μοντερνισμό, για τον οποίο κυρίαρχο σημείο αναφοράς είναι η γαλλική εκδοχή του μοντερνισμού, ο γαλλικός σουρεαλισμός. Ακολουθεί η λεπτομερής καταγραφή της παρουσίας του Georg Trakl στα ελληνικά γράμματα. Ο ποιητής μεταφράζεται και γίνεται γνωστός στην Ελλάδα μόλις μετά τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, όχι νωρίτερα, αρχικά μέσα από τις μεταφράσεις του ασπαζόμενου τον υπερρεαλισμό Δημήτριου Στ. Δήμου το 1950, ο οποίος μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ο εισηγητής του έργου του στην Ελλάδα. Έκτοτε το ενδιαφέρον για τον ποιητή και ο αριθμός των μεταφράσεων από το έργο του και των σχετικών δοκιμίων διαρκώς αυξάνονται, με προεξάρχουσα την φιλολογικά ιδιαίτερα τεκμηριωμένη και εκτενώς σχολιασμένη δίγλωσση έκδοση το 1990 του συνόλου σχεδόν των ποιημάτων του, που επιμελήθηκε η μεταφράστρια, ποιήτρια και πεζογράφος Έλενα Νούσια. Στο πλαίσιο της διερεύνησης των ποιητικών σχέσεων που προέκυψαν από την επαφή με το έργο του Trakl και κατά συνέπεια με τον γερμανικό εξπρεσιονισμό, θα πρέπει να αναφέρουμε και πάλι την Έλενα Νούσια, για την οποία τεκμηριώνονται συσχετισμοί ανάμεσα στην μεταφραστική και στην προσωπική της ποιητική δημιουργία, αλλά και τον Μίλτο Σαχτούρη, για τον οποίο έχει ειπωθεί πως «είναι η πιο εξπρεσιονιστική συνείδηση και ποιητική εκδοχή της λογοτεχνίας μας· θα έλεγα, μάλιστα, η μόνη» (Γ. Δάλλας, 1997). Ο Σαχτούρης γνώριζε εις βάθος και εκτιμούσε τον γερμανικό εξπρεσιονισμό, και ιδιαίτερα τον Georg Trakl, το έργο του οποίου διάβασε εν μέρει στο πρωτότυπο και εν μέρει σε γαλλική μετάφραση. Πράγματι, η εκ του σύνεγγυς θεώρηση του έργου του Σαχτούρη τεκμηριώνει ποιητική συγγένεια με το έργο του Trakl.

Στη σημερινή μετανεωτερική ολυμπιακή πραγματικότητα, η χρήση αναχρονιστικών βιολογικών ‘δεδομένων’ ή βιολογίστικων θεωρήσεων (Sandow 1898, Möbius 1908, Coubertin 1912, Weininger 1917, Webster 1930, Pfister 1990), βάσει των οποίων θεσμοθετήθηκαν και δομήθηκαν οι έμφυλες ιεραρχίες στον αθλητισμό αμφισβητούνται και επαναπροσδιορίζονται. Σ’ ένα υπό εξέλιξη θεωρητικό διάλογο στην κοινωνική περιοχή του αθλητισμού και της φυσικής αγωγής, είναι ερευνητικά τεκμηριωμένο ότι το «ανήκειν σε ένα φύλο» είναι αποτέλεσμα πολλών και πολύπλοκων κοινωνικών διεργασιών—πέραν της βιολογικής διαφοράς (Hargreaves 2000, McNay 2000, Evans and Penney 2002, Kirk 2002, Heywood and Dworkin 2003, Χαραχούσου 2003, Creedon 2006, Messner & Raewyn 2007, McDonagh & Pappano 2007, Kamberidou 2007). Στις σύγχρονες συζητήσεις για το φύλο, το έμφυλο υποκείμενο (gendered subject) την έμφυλη ταυτότητα και το ανθρώπινο σώμα, το βιολογικό φύλο (sex) δεν αποτελεί αποκλειστική αναλυτική κατηγορία. Τη θέση του παίρνει το κοινωνικό φύλο (gender) το οποίο διαμορφώνει, προσδιορίζει και επαναπροσδιορίζει την ταυτότητα σύμφωνα με κοινωνικές-πολιτισμικές ερμηνείες και εξελίξεις (Λεοντσίνι 1996, McNay 2000, Μαλουτά 2002, Aitchison 2003, Kimmel 2004, Holmes 2007). Το νόημα του αγγλοσαξονικής προέλευσης όρου gender (φύλο/κοινωνικό φύλο), παραπέμπει στο κοινωνικό υποκείμενο. Ερμηνεύεται σε κοινωνικό-ιστορικό πλαίσιο και δεν αφορά μόνο τις γυναίκες. INTRODUCTION Plasma cell dyscrasias include a wide variety of diseases characterized by the abnormal accumulation of plasma cells resulting in various systemic symptoms and signs. Plasma cells are usually widespread throughout the bone marrow; however, in a minority of patients malignant plasma cells may form a single lesion. These lesions are usually confined to the bone and, less frequently, in extramedullary sites. They are composed of monoclonal plasma cells that are otherwise identical to plasma cells found in myeloma. However, these patients do not have evidence of systemic multiple myeloma (MM), and an extensive work up shows no other foci of disease. When this solitary lesion is confined to bone it is characterized as a solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP) while when this lesion is confined to extraosseous sites it is characterized as a solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP). DEFINITIONS According to criteria reported by the International Myeloma Working Group, diagnosis of solitary plasmacytoma of bone is based on histological evidence of a tumor consisting of monoclonal plasma cells identical to those seen in MM (Table 12.1). In addition, complete skeletal radiographs must show no other lesions of MM. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has significantly increased sensitivity over conventional radiographs, especially in the imaging of the axial skeleton, and an MRI of the spine and pelvis may show unsuspected and asymptomatic skeletal lesions. Patients with multiple lesions in MRI should be considered as having myeloma and not SBP even if conventional radiographs show no other evidence of skeletal involvement. © Cambridge University Press 2009.

 Recent studies argue that the spread-adjusted Taylor rule (STR), which includes a response to the credit spread, replicates monetary policy in the United State. We show (1) STR is a theoretically optimal monetary policy under heterogeneous loan interest rate contracts in both discretionay and commitment monetary policies, (2) however, the optimal response to the credit spread is ambiguous given the financial market structure in theoretically derived STR, and (3) there, a commitment policy is effective in narrowing the credit spread when the central bank hits the zero lower bound constraint of the policy rate.

La présente étude traite des liens, qui unissent Lacarrière, connaisseur de l’histoire de l’art, à l’art occidental. En nous appuyant sur ses essais, ses préfaces et les catalogues d’expositions qu’il a rédigés, ainsi que sur ses collaborations avec des artistes dans le cadre d’éditions artistiques, nous présentons ses préférences esthétiques et nous révélons certaines de ses sources d’inspirations. Après avoir abordé sa révision du mythe d’Icare dans l’art, nous examinons sa description de l’atelier Brancusi. Ensuite, nous analysons la présentation des artistes français dans des préfaces et des catalogues rédigés à l’occasion des expositions. Dans Aristide Caillaud l’enchanteur 1902-1990  (2001), Lacarrière, qui établit le lien entre les créations de l’artiste et sa vie personnelle, nous fait découvrir son univers. Finalement, nous étudions les créations artistiques, qui ont illustré ses récits.

Cette étude ambitionne d’éclairer un aspect de la voie singulière tracée par Simone de Beauvoir au sein de l’Université où elle fut professeure de philosophie entre 1931 et 1941 : l’acte de voyager. La réflexion proposée tente d’inscrire les voyages beauvoiriens « outre France » (1931-1938) dans le contexte plus vaste de l’expérience viatique d’avant-guerre des enseignantes du secondaire, afin de mettre en évidence le caractère spécifique des pérégrinations de cette professeure de passage. Dans cette perspective, le récit viatique de Beauvoir incorporé dans son oeuvre autobiographique La force de l’âge (avec des renvois à sa correspondance personnelle avec Jean Paul Sartre et Jacques-Laurent Bost): est étudié en confrontation avec les textes de six enseignantes et anciennes Sévriennes publiés entre 1938 et 1934 dans le Bulletin de l’Association des élèves et anciennes élèves de Sèvres.Compte tenu de l’hétérogénéité relative du corpus, de la pluralité des discours et de la diversité des voix qui interviennent en chassé-croisé, cette analyse comparative permet de faire surgir l’originalité du récit de Simone de Beauvoir. Les textes des six Sévriennes transmis au sein d’un réseau universitaire ont clairement un but pédagogique : en privilégiant une approche de l’altérité qui respecte le discours hégémonique de l'époque, ils visent en premier lieu à informer, à instruire sinon à inciter au voyage. Leurs auteurs font ainsi de l’acte d’écrire un acte social. À l’opposé, la narration de Simone de Beauvoir relate un voyage individuel dont le but est la recherche d’un bonheur égoïste à travers la découverte d’un monde culturellement et socialement différent. L’acte de publicité est dans une optique d’utilité sociale entièrement gratuit : il s’agit d’un acte de création littéraire à travers lequel est assouvi encore une fois un besoin personnel.

The aim of this paper is to study the historical alluviation of Thessaloniki using mainly archaeological data. Such data have been found in many places in the study-area. These findings date from the Neolithic to the Ottoman period. We have approached this problem by studying the geomorphological processes of this area and through detailed mapping of the alluviation around ancient monuments. A spatial database was created containing geological, geomorphological and archaeological data, along with all measurements collected during fieldwork. Apart from contemporary data, older topographical maps of the area were also imported and analyzed in the GIS together with the other datasets. The results indicate that deposition rates vary on temporal and spatial scales. This is due to the topography, the lithology and the climatic changes in the area. Thus, the whole landscape of Thessaloniki area has undergone continuous change; we have estimated vertical deposition rates ranging between 1,66 and 7,5 mm p.a.

The associations between various meteorological parameters, concentrations of PM10, SO2, and O3 pollutants and bronchial asthma of residents of the wider region of Athens are examined in this study. For this purpose, 1,288 patients’ admissions (412 males and 876 females) recorded in 13 pneumonological clinics of Sotiria Hospital, which is the major Hospital for respiratory diseases in Athens, were analyzed for the period 1/1/2001–31/12/2002. The meteorological data were available by the National Observatory of Athens and the concentrations of PM10, SO2, and O3 pollutants were obtained by the air pollution network of 10 stations of the Ministry of Environment (Directorate of Air and Noise pollution Control).The evaluation of the possible relationship between the bronchial asthma admissions (BAA) and the meteorological variables was achieved by the application of Generalized Linear Models with Poisson distribution, because the medical dataset presents large divergence from a Gaussian distribution. The results showed that a statistically significant (p < 0.01) negative correlation between all examined air temperature variables, water vapor pressure, evaporation, sunshine, total solar irradiance, and BAA exists. Moreover, the findings of the analysis showed that a statistically significant relationship between the examined pollutants and BAA on the same day does not exist, with the exception of O3, which is correlated negatively (p < 0.01) with BAA. Nevertheless, there is a statistically significant lag effect (7–8 days) between the increase in BAA and the peak in the concentrations of PM10, SO2, and O3 pollutants. During the cold period of the year (October–April), BAA is significantly associated with O3 lag 2 day. The interannual variation of bronchial asthma admissions (BAA) reveals peaks within the transitional seasons of the year (spring and autumn), while the main minimum is apparent during summer period and especially in August.

Στο κείμενο αυτό παρουσιάζονται με συντομία οι απόψεις του αγ. Γρηγορίου Νύσσης για τη μεταθανάτια κατάληξη των νηπίων και επιχειρείται η αναλογική σύνδεση του θέματος με τα έμβρυα που καταστρέφονται στις σύγχρονες αναπαραγωγικές τεχνολογίες. Ωστόσο το άρθρο δεν φιλοδοξεί να απαντήσει για την αβέβαιη κατάληξη των υπάρξεων αυτών, αλλά να προβληματίσει με τα ερωτήματα που  απορρέουν, είτε από το έργο του αγίου Γρηγορίου για τα νήπια είτε από τα σημερινά δεδομένα για τα έμβρυα.

This paper investigates the correlation between control and finiteness in Greek subjunctive clauses. It is shown that the main control pattern is Partial Control (PC) and that Exhaustive Control (EC) is very limited and occurs only with Anaphoric Subjunctives. On the basis of evidence from distribution and case agreement, it is claimed that Greek subjunctive T is finite, so that it always checks nominative case on the subject, even in EC constructions. It is therefore argued that control in Greek subjunctives cannot be accounted for by a PRO or a movement/Agree approach, because (i) the attested control pattern does not exhibit the properties of control as predicted by these approaches and (ii) their licensing conditions are not met. Additional crucial evidence is presented from constructions where control is attested over a lexical (either pronoun or DP) subject or even an object clitic. Thus, it is claimed that control in Greek subjunctive clauses is not the result of the licensing of the properties of their subject, but it derives from the licensing of their special temporal properties and from the semantic requirements of the main predicate.

This chapter concerns the application of computing technologies in Geoarchaeology. The main issue is the combination of GIS and remote sensing technologies with on-site observations of the archaeological, geomorphological and geological characteristics of the area. This combination involves gathering all the necessary information of the spatial structures: geological, topographical, geomorphological and archaeological data. The main target is the composition of the palaeolandscape in order to reveal the paleotopography of Thera and the archaeological site of Akrotiri before the Minoan eruption. GIS analytical tools may help to recreate the different phases of landform evolution of Thera before the Minoan era till nowadays. Thus, 3D models before the Minoan, during the Minoan and after the Minoan phase were produced. Furthermore, the chapter focuses on the geomorphology of Akrotiri site, the most important archaeological site on Thera. The geological formations and the dominant erosion and deposition processes were mapped in order to understand the geomorphological evolution of the area. The extensive reworking and adaptation of the geomorphology from sustained volcanic activity over a long period has resulted in huge physical changes: loss of a central area of the island, coastline modifications, soil loss, deposition and abandonment of valleys and settlement sites. This abrupt evolution have played a major role to the land use change and land cultivation, strongly affecting the local communities, perhaps emphasising and coinciding with distinctive periods of cultural expansion and contraction.

Kernel discriminants are greatly appreciated because 1) they permit to establish nonlinear boundaries between classes and 2) they offer the possibility of visualizing graphically the data vectors belonging to different classes. One such method, called Generalized Discriminant analysis (GDA) was proposed by Baudat and Anouar (2000). GDA operates on a kernel matrix of size N x N, (N denotes the sample size) and is for large N prohibitive. Our aim was to find out how this method works in a real situation, when dealing with relatively large data. We considered a set of predictors of erosion risk in the Kefallinia island categorized into five classes of erosion risk (together N=3422 data items). Direct evaluation of the discriminants, using entire data, was computationally demanding. Therefore, we sought for a representative sample. We found it by a kind of sieve algorithm. It appeared that using the representative sample, we could greatly speed up the evaluations and obtain discriminative functions with good generalization properties. We have workedwith Gaussian kernels which need one declared parameter SIGMA called kernelwidth. We found that for a large range of parameters the GDA algorithm gavevisualization with a good separation of the considered risk classes.

We present our experience in visualization multivariate data when the data vectors have class assignment. The goal is then to visualize the data in such a way that data vectors belonging to different classes (subgroups) appear differentiated as much as possible. We consider for this purpose the traditional CDA (Canonical Discriminant Functions), the GDA (Generalized Discriminant Analysis, Baudat and Anouar, 2000) and the Supervised SOM (Kohonen, Makivasara, Saramaki 1984). The methods are applied to a set of 3-dimensional erosion data containing N=3420 data vectors subdivided into 5 classes of erosion risk. By performing the mapping of these data to a plane, we hope to gain some experience how the mentioned methods work in practice and what kind of visualization is obtained. The final conclusion is that the traditional CDA is the best both in speed (time) of the calculations and in the ability of generalization.

The paper takes up the question of the finiteness of the subjunctive, in particular the Greek subjunctive. Taking into account discussions within the gene­rative framework, it adopts the position that the sub­junctive is indeed finite, and examines the main stumbling block in this direction, namely its uni­versally acknowledged lack of semantic tense. It challenges this assumption, analysing a subset of its uses, that in na-complements, in an attempt to show that there is a temporal dimension to the sub­junctive even in its narrowest sense (when the only choice available is between the three aspectually opposed forms): the event it denotes is always placed at a time posterior to that of matrix verbs with a deontic meaning and contemporaneous to that of matrix verbs with a sensory/perceptual meaning.
